Social celebration
In honor of the quasquicentennial (125 year) celebration of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 218 E. High St. in Portland, the church is hosting a free ice cream social for the community at 1 p.m. Sunday at the church with vanilla ice cream, pie, cake and cookies. The Rev. Mark Strietelmeier has been pastor of the church since 1981. Zion held its first service on June 4, 1889, and completed the building in 1899. The parsonage was bought in 1961, and a contemporary house of worship was dedicated in 1963. The church has been the home of Zion Early Learning Center preschool since 1983. (Photo celebration)

    After being closed for several years, the doors to a little country church in Jay County are open again and the new pastor feels he was led there by God. 
  • The 11th Annual Bluegrass Gospel Jamboree will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene. 
  • Hopewell of Life Ministries will have an outside service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church, followed by a cook-out. 
  • Echoes of Happiness will perform during the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. 
  • Visit with old friends and make new ones at an ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Fairview United Methodist Church, 2875 E. 200 South, Portland. 
  • Evangelical Methodist Church will have a Community Movie Night on Friday, Aug. 8, with the showing of the movie “God’s Not Dead.” Refreshments will be served. 
  • Union Chapel Church of the Nazarene will host a Block Party from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Pennville Park. 
  • Tom Ogalo, East and North Africa director of T-4 Global Inc., will be speaking at 10 a.m. Aug. 3 at Grace Bible Church. 
  • Pastors George and Marie Hughes invite all bikers to hear born again biker Steve “Slowride” Haskins share his testimony and experiences from throughout the United States.
