Conference to be held in April

Beauty in Small Places II, a conference for rural and small communities, will be held Thursday, April 10, and Friday, April 11, at Arts Place in Portland.
The conference will celebrate and explore creative approaches to nurturing the arts in rural and small communities of 25,000 or less. Guest speakers will share success stories how they revitalized their communities through the arts. There will be several speakers, including Amanda Fickey, assistant professor of intercultural geography and coordinator of Appalachian studies at Union College in Kentucky; Beth Flowers, executive director of The Arts Incubator of the Rockies and Beet Street in Fort Collins, Colo., and Theresa Cameron, manager of local arts agency services with Americans for the Arts.
The conference is sponsored by the Indiana Arts Commission, First Merchants Bank and Joyce Ribble. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The cost for registration before April 8 is $90, and beginning April 9, the cost is $110.

Mercer Health will give free prostate screenings at Community Medical Center in Celina, Ohio.
The screenings will be given from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday by Dr. T. Amaran.
Men with a family history of prostate cancer should be checked at age 35 and others at age 40. A PSA blood test will be included with the exam.

Free mammograms, for low income women, will be given at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur through a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust.
The grant is funded by the purchase of specialty license plates for breast cancer awareness in Indiana.
Women who exceed the 150 percent federal poverty level are eligible.

Amie Carpenter will have free indoor walking classes at Jay County 4-H Exhibit Hall.
Classes will begin Monday, March 31, and will be held from noon to 1 p.m. or 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. through April 28.
A free instructional DVD will be given at the end of the course.
