Portland Board of Works voted today to hire a new police officer.
Robert Armstrong will be filling the vacancy left when former police chief Bob Sours retired in February.
Police chief Nathan Springer said Armstrong has been a reserve with the department since April and has done well.
“He’s doing pretty good,” Springer said.
“(I’ve heard) nothing but good things from the officers he works with.”
Mayor Randy Geesaman said the new hire will allow the department to operate with the number of officers it’s supposed to have.
“He was highly recommended and did well in his interview,” Geesaman said of Armstrong.
Armstrong will begin work once he meets all state requirements, which typically takes a month, Springer said.
Armstrong lives in Portland with his fiancé and child.
