Robert H. Read, who served as president of Portland Forge from 1976 to 1990, died Monday at Swiss Village, Berne. He was 86.
A former resident of Portland, he was born in Jacksonville, Ill., the son of Roy and Nona (Hart) Read.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he was married on June 25, 1950, to Martha Smith, who survives.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Illinois College in 1952, his master’s degree in physics from Penn State in 1953 and his Ph.D. in metallurgy from Penn State in 1955.
In 1981, he was the recipient of the Illinois College Alumni Distinguished Service Award.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Cincinnatus League, Portland. He was a member and past president of the Portland Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Surviving are his wife, Martha; a son, James Read, Hilton, New York; and two daughters, Dr. Holly Read Maul, Libertyville, Ill., and Jennifer Read Murray, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Portland, with Pastor Stan Gockel presiding. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.bairdfreeman.com.
