To the editor:
There are not enough words to say thank you to each of you who volunteered, donated, attended, participated, encouraged and prayed to make the 2014 Walk Against Cancer on Saturday, June 21, a huge success. Thank you to the Walk committee and all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly before, during and after the walk, and especially to a community who gave so generously from their hearts and wallets to the Jay County Cancer Society.
We are happy to announce that the result of all of these combined efforts raised $35,000, of which 100 percent stays in Jay County to help those living with cancer.
Just prior to the start of the Walk, all cancer survivors were invited to attend a dinner which was prepared and served by the Knights of Columbus. Also in attendance were our many sponsors who have shown tremendous support year after year. Without your contributions we could not do what we do. The evening was highlighted with the National Anthem, invocation and balloon launch and the first official lap was led by survivors and their families.
The luminary ceremony at the end of the evening provided a time of quiet reflection and remembrance for those we have lost and honoring our loved ones who have won the fight.
There were over 800 names read during this ceremony with 1,000 lighted candles around the Jay County High School track. The event also included a kids’ area with games and activities for the youth which was provided free of charge along with numerous other activities throughout the evening.
We are all fortunate to live in a community full of people not only willing to be generous with their money but also their time. The Walk had more than 100 volunteers who put in too many hours to begin to count over the past several months to make this event such a success. As a result of your hard work, the Jay County Cancer Society is able to help so many cancer patients in Jay County with cancer-related expenses such as medications, medical bills, prosthetics and so much more not covered by insurance.
We hope you all plan to attend the Walk next year on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Everyone is invited and welcome.
There are many ways to become involved with the Walk, including collecting pledges, being a sponsor or volunteering your time. If you would like to be involved , please contact Angela Twigg at (260) 726-4077 or by leaving a message on the Cancer Society’s message line at (260) 726-8110,
Donations are always welcome and can be mailed to: Walk Against Cancer, P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN 47371 or at The Portland Foundation in the Jay County Cancer Society endowment fund. The endowment fund will ensure that the Cancer Society can continue to provide financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for many years to come.
See you all next year!
