Chris Schanz became sports editor of The Commercial Review on July 1, 2013. He previously spent 15 months as a freelance writer and photographer for The Township View, a weekly publication in his hometown of Saginaw, Mich.

In 2016, Schanz was honored by the Hoosier State Press Association Better Newspaper Contest for best sports feature photo, best sports action photo and best feature photo, which was the Division III finalist for photo of the year. Additionally, he finished first for best deadline sports story and second for spot news photo in 2016 by the Indiana Associated Press Media Editors for Division IV. He also teamed with editor Ray Cooney for best digital media presence. In 2015, Schanz received an HSPA award for best sports feature story and finished second for spot news photo.

Schanz graduated from Heritage High School (Saginaw, Mich.) in 2004, and from Central Michigan University in 2011. He was an opinion columnist for Central Michigan Life, CMU’s student-run newspaper, and also volunteered for the CMU Athletic Communications department assisting with baseball, women’s basketball, gymnastics and field hockey.

He is an avid Detroit sports fan as well as the Michigan State Spartans and Atlanta Braves. He spends his free time at the gym, playing basketball poorly, searching for the perfect running route, listening to music and taking pictures.
