A celebration of 100 years (09/15/06)
Editorial
It's been a remarkable 100 years.
When Jay County Hospital celebrates its centennial on Saturday, there will be much to be proud of. From humble beginnings, the hospital has grown into a modern, progressive, sophisticated institution that would be the envy of any community in rural America.
The path hasn't always been smooth, and the progress hasn't always been seamless. But the hospitals leaders - its trustees, its medical staff, and its employees - have consistently pushed in the right direction.
The result is a degree of medical care and professionalism that wouldn't have been thought possible a generation ago.
Not long after the mid-point of Jay County Hospital's century, for example, its future was in doubt. The physical facility was inadequate and dated, the medical staff was shrinking, and physician recruitment was an enormous problem.
But the community and the hospital rallied, took on the commitment to build a modern facility and aggressively recruited new staff.
When changes in medicine shortened hospital stays, the institution changed as well, putting greater emphasis on out-patient services.
When more and more specialized services were required, Jay County Hospital hastened to provide them locally.
When it needed to adapt to a new environment, it adapted. And by doing so, it not only survived but thrived.
For any centenarian, that's an accomplishment to be proud of.
