Pennville will get a second recycling trailer.
Jay County Solid Waste Management District Board approved Monday for a second trailer to be added in Pennville on its regular recycling day, the third Saturday of each month.
The group also discussed returning to two free landfill days each year.
District financial manager Freda Corwin introduced the idea for a second recycling trailer in Pennville to the board after volunteers who staff the site made the request. They said there is an increase in recycling volume during the summer months.
The additional trailer will cost $213 per month with an additional tonnage fee estimated at between $40 and $80.
The board, which agreed in April to add a second trailer once a month in Dunkirk, voted 6-0 with Bill Gibson absent to approve the second trailer.
Following up on a discussion from its May meeting, the board also discussed free days at Jay County Landfill.
The district’s contract with landfill operator Waste Management calls for two free days per year. But the board agreed in August to cut back to one free day, to be held in conjunction with JCSWMD’s Tox Away Day, with the time extended by two hours.
Board member Milo Miller Jr. said in May several residents had approached him and said there was not enough time for them to make it to both sites on the same day.

The board requested that landfill operations manager Gary Schaublin attend its next meeting to discuss the possibility of returning to two free days each year as well as holding the fall free day on a different day than Tox Away Day.
In other business, board members Jim Zimmerman, Faron Parr, Dan Watson, Jeannie Houchins, Randy Geesaman and Miller:
•Received a projected 2015 budget from Corwin. The budget comes in at $222,395, which is up about $12,000 from this year. Income is projected at $250,000. The board plans to review the budget at its July meeting.
•Heard the district educator’s report from Bettie Jacobs. She will submit a proposal to The Portland Foundation for $1,290 for 100 kits to create rain barrels. She plans to hold a rain barrel workshop later this year. She will also march in the Pennville Legion Lions Fair Parade June 28 and the Fourth of July Parade in Portland.
•Approved spending $100 to sponsor a hole for the Jay County Special Olympics Golf Outing.
•Transferred $95 from the tire recycling fund to pay for a booth at Jay County Fair. JCSWMD will have an larger booth this year and will be handing out bags made from recycled bottles.
•Approved paying claims totaling $15,985.01. The district brought in a total of $28,001 over the last month and has a total balance of $332,582.21.[[In-content Ad]]
