Tourney trips set up a fun weekend
Rays of Insight
This weekend is going to be fun.
Trips to the state’s top athletic events are always a good time. When there’s an opportunity for great success, it’s even better.
There is a chance for a huge amount of success Friday and Saturday with Jay County High School freshman Anne Vormohr seeded fifth in the 100-yard backstroke for the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State finals and Kyle Garringer and Eric Hemmelgarn among the favorites to win championships at the semi-state wrestling tournament in Fort Wayne.
Hemmelgarn provided probably the most exciting day for a Patriot athlete last season when he shocked the field at the state finals to finish third in the heavyweight division.
Garringer is primed to break through after losing ticket-round matches at the semi-state tournament in each of the last two seasons. Like Hemmelgarn, he has won sectional and regional titles this season and takes a 42-0 record into Saturday’s action.
Vormohr, who will also compete in the 100-yard freestyle, has been training for this moment for most of her life.
She won Indiana age group state championships in the 10-and-younger and 12-and-younger divisions. And competed at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships in November.
Vormohr has already had a spectacular season as she and her cousin, Sophie Bader, have rewritten the Jay County record book.
There is a great chance she will cap her freshman year with JCHS principal Phil Ford hanging a state medal around Vormohr’s neck on Saturday afternoon. And hopefully that will be just the start of a great tournament season for the Patriots.
