William J. “Billy Joe” Smith, age 71, of Fort Recovery, Ohio, died Sept. 16, 2019, at Briarwood Village, Coldwater, Ohio.

He was born June 18, 1948, in Celina, Ohio, to the late Marion and Norma (Rohrer) Smith.

Surviving are his son, Andy (Angie) Smith of Jamestown, Ohio; a daughter, Amy Garringer of Mendon, Ohio; grandchildren Cody, Lachelle, Kelsie and Emily; fiancé Karen Bell of Fort Recovery and her two sons, Scott Bell of Mount Gilead, Ohio, and Jeff Kittle of St. Marys, Ohio; and two nephews, Terry (Mary) Stump of Portland, Indiana, and Greg (Marti) Stump of Winchester, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elaine Stump, and a brother, Jeff Smith.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed auto racing and working on cars and motorcycles.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brockman – Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery, with Steve Long officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery.

Calling is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brockman – Boeckman Funeral Home. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Fort Recovery American Legion.
