Back in the Saddle
Duet sparked idea for slideshow
By the time you read this, I should have made my debut at Miller’s Merry Manor. Technically, it’s not actually my debut.
Column elicited many responses
You never know what’s going to prompt a response from readers.
Girl of dreams gave grill of dreams
I’ve finally found the grill of my dreams.
Old road has been lost to history
The rows of corn kept marching in neat lines, east to west, north to south. There wasn’t any hint of northwest or southeast to be seen. Any trace of what I was looking for had long ago been erased by passing time.
The fair is about making memories
The great thing about a county fair is that it isn’t just about this week. It’s about all the county fair memories from years gone by, about the traditions, the rituals, and the rites of passage.
Entry in parade was unintentional
If there is a record for walking backwards down Meridian Street in Portland, I may hold it.
Something was lost in translation
We ran into our first “Youse” near Buffalo this time.
Father’s Day gift tilted battlefield
Mine was not your usual Fathers’ Day.
Tragic story left a haunting feeling
The guy in the coffee shop keeps weighing on my mind.
Great race stunt was unforgettable
The Great American Race rolled through Indiana last week, and I admit to feeling a bit of an itch to join it.
Community is an extended family
The question came at the end of a long presentation. I’d been speaking to the Portland Kiwanis Club about Moldova, showing slides and generally going on too long about our experience last year in that country.
Puttering did not come naturally
(Editor’s note: This column is being reprinted from May 5, 1999. My impression is that Jack got a little better at puttering as time went on, especially after his retirement, although a good book likely always came first.)
There was always time to fly a kite
He was late for the interview, which should have been a clue.
Baseball made it feel like spring
There. That’s better. This has been an odd, somewhat out of kilter spring.
Employee merits at least a column
What do you do when someone retires a second time? Throw a re-retirement party? I don’t think so. Instead, you write a column.
