It was a gloomy weekend in Jay County, as shown by this Saturday morning photo looking south on Meridian Street from its intersection with Walnut Street, but a fortunate one in terms of flooding. The area avoided major flooding issues despite consistent rain that started Thursday evening and continued through the weekend. Jay County had been under a flood watch and a river flood warning. To the editor:

I have lived at the intersection of High and Wayne streets in Portland for 40 years.

Anytime we get a decent rain, the street basin at the corner of the intersection plugs up, and at times water almost goes clear across the street.

When this happens, I get a tremendous amount of water in my basement.

This only happens when the sewer basin plugs up.

I have seen them bring the suction truck down many times, but this has not done anything for the backup of water.

It would really be nice if this could be corrected.

This intersection will plug before many other ones in town.

I have driven around town at times, and this corner seems to be the worst.

Thank you.
