MUNCIE — Aaron Funkhouser was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash and the 4x800 relay team ran a season-best time Saturday as the Jay County boys track team placed eighth overall in the Muncie Central Relays.

Hamilton Southeastern scored 146 points for the team title, while Delta (96) was second and Yorktown (76.5) placed third. Jay County’s 23 points were last out of eight teams.

Funkhouser had a time of 11.24 seconds to finish second, the best individual effort for the Patriots on the day.

Dustin Harris, Griffin Lennartz, Cristian Marentes and Mitchell Winner had a time of 9 minutes, 57.86 seconds, in the 4x800 relay. Their season-best time was seventh.

Skyler Bee, Gavin Farmer, Owen Ransom and Adrek Pogue were fifth in the 4x100 relay.

Jay falls to Stars

The Jay County girls tennis team fell to 1-1 in conference play Monday with a 4-1 home loss to the South Adams Starfires.

The Patriots (4-2, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) got their only win from the No. 2 doubles team of Lilly Hedges and Holly Hemmelgarn, who defeated Maggie Nussbaum and Samantha Weigel by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

Grace Brewster and Kierston Blunk both lost their respective singles matches in three sets. Brewster fell to Alexa Kinsey at No. 1 singles 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, while Blunk dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 No. 3 singles match to Ashlynn Claghorn.

Lyric Garringer lost her No. 2 singles contest to Anna Dee, 6-4, 6-4.

Brenna Haines and Courtney Benter each got junior varsity singles victories, while doubles teams of Heaven Hambrock and Allison Byrum as well as Melana Zimmerman and Kaylee Zimmerman also earned victories.

Patriots third

WINCHESTER — The Jay County boys golf team finished second Monday in a three-team meet with Winchester and Monroe Central at Winchester Golf Club.

Monroe Central shot 161 for first place, with Jay County totaling 184, 10 strokes ahead of Winchester.

Caleb DeRome paced the Patriots with his score of 40, and Kyle Sanders was second on the team with his round of 46. Griffin Mann and Simon Pryor had matching scores of 49 to complete the Patriots’ team total.

Brock DeHoff shot 52, but did not factor into the team total.

Golfers take third

GENEVA — Jay County’s boys golf team missed finishing as the runner-up by two strokes Saturday at the South Adams Invitational.

Monroe Central totaled 322 for the championship, with Norwell second with 363. Jay County shot 364 for third out of 12 teams.

Caleb DeRome led Jay County by placing sixth overall with his round of 83. Griffin Mann shot 87, including making a 70-foot shot for eagle on the par-4 seventh hole, for 10th overall.

Simon Pryor shot 92 for 17th, and Kyle Sanders finished 36th with his round of 102.

Brock DeHoff also competed but his round of 106 did not factor into the team total.

Girls win, boys second

Jay County Junior High School’s girls track team finished first Monday while the boys were second in a meet they hosted with Heritage and Bluffton.

The Patriot girls scored 84 points for their win, with Bluffton (44) second and Heritage (8) third.

Bluffton’s boys scored 61 points to take first, with Jay County (53.5) second and Heritage (22.5) third.

Morgan DeHoff was a triple winner for the Patriot girls, getting victories in the 100-meter hurdles, 200 hurdles and long jump. Jenna Dues (100 dash, 200 dash) and Alexis Sibray (1,600 run, 800 run) both had a pair of wins, too. Kenzie Huey (shot put) and Mya Kunkler (high jump) earned individual victories.

Jay County’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays also got wins.

Garrett Hiday was first in the 100 dash, 200 dash and long jump, while Joseph Boggs got a 1,600 run win.
