A Portland man from Oakwood Motor Home Community reported several items missing the day after Christmas.

Oscar Gutierrez called Jay County Sheriff’s Office about 1:55 p.m. Saturday. He told officers that when he returned from a Christmas party he noticed his large screen TV, bass guitar, some clothes and about $200 were missing from his home.

Left the scene

A Montpelier man drove away after his vehicle collided with a Richmond man’s vehicle Sunday.

Jason E. Hines Sr., 48, was turning left onto county road 500 South from Indiana 1 about 4:23 p.m. when Mark A. Binegar, 56, attempted to pass Hines’ vehicle. Hines’ 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis hit the passenger side of Binegar’s 2012 Dodge Ram Pickup.

Binegar continued north on Indiana 1 without stopping. Hines followed and called 911 to give officers their location. A Jay County officer stopped Binegar at the intersection of county road 1100 West and Indiana 26. Binegar said he thought Hines drove into his truck, but he didn’t want to stop because he thought the man was impaired, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. When asked why he didn’t call the police, Binegar said he didn’t think about it. He was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report. Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Gas pump accident

A Portland man backed his vehicle into another car about 2:40 p.m. Friday.

Vicky L. Boxell told police she pulled up to an out-of-service gas pump, so she decided to park while she waited for an open pump. That’s when Eric R. Johnston, 41, backed his 2002 Chevy Trailblazer into Boxell’s 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. Damage is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Three firetrucks and 14 firefighters arrived at the scene, extinguishing the fire in about 20 minutes. The fire caused damage to the bedroom ceiling and some attic joists.
