Indians knock off No. 2 Marion Local

FORT RECOVERY — Bring on No. 1.

Battling the top team in the state is the only step left for the Fort Recovery volleyball team. It took care of the No. 2 team in Division IV Thursday, defeating the Midwest Athletic Conference-rival Marion Local Flyers 20-25, 25-19, 25-12, 17-25, 15-9 at the Fort Site Fieldhouse.

The Indians (12-7, 4-2 Midwest Athletic Conference), who were 16th in this week’s Division IV voting, will get their chance at the top team soon enough. They visit Division IV No. 1 St. Henry Tuesday at 6 p.m.

After splitting the first two games, Fort Recovery dominated the third, but dropped the fourth thanks to an 8-1 Flyer run which put the visiting team in control. The fifth game, however, was all about the Tribe.

Senior Krystal Rammel served the Indians to a 5-0 lead, getting the first two points from sophomore Tiff Gaerke. Gaerke had a block and a kill, and Holly Stein added a kill during the stretch.

Fort Recovery got another 4-0 run, including an ace, with Jennalee Post serving to take a 10-2 lead. Marion Local managed four straight points to pull within 10-6, but Vicki Roessner ended that rally with back-to-back kills.

The Flyers (15-3) would never get that close again, and Holly Stein notched the match-ending kill.

It was the middle hitters — Gaerke and Rammel — who carried the load for the Tribe.

Gaerke had team highs of 23 kills and eight blocks, and Rammel paced the Indians with 19 points. Gaerke also had 11 points and 10 digs, and Rammel added 13 digs, 11 kills and five blocks.

Post, the Tribe’s junior setter, also reached double figures in points with 14 to go along with her 51 assists. Rachel Brackman had 26 digs, and Roessner added 13 digs.

Fort Recovery also took the junior varsity match, knocking off the Flyers 25-19, 17-25, 15-9 to improve to 13-2, 4-2 in the MAC.

Jodi Tobe earned nearly three-quarters of the Indians’ service points, finishing with 21. She also had 13 digs and one block.

Lauren Wenning racked up 13 kills and three blocks, and Alicia Schwieterman had eight kills and six points. Abby Niekamp finished with 25 assists, Brittany Brackman had 15 digs and Sarah Braun got five blocks.
