Local Roundup

BERNE — Bellmont is not the team to invite when looking to end a losing streak.

The South Adams boys basketball team dropped to 0-2 Saturday night with a 51-29 loss to the visiting Class 3A No. 2 Braves. It was the 14th straight loss for the Starfires.

The home team managed to stay close in the first half, trailing by just four points after one quarter and only three at halftime. But Bellmont outscored South Adams 15-4 in the third quarter to take control, and added another 20 points in the fourth.

Adam Arnold, who is signed to play at Indiana State next season, scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the final period for Bellmont. Aaron Ritchie, a Central Michigan recruit, added 11 points, and Brian “Corky” Schultz scored 10 points.

South Adams got its high mark of nine points from reserve Jordan Sharp. Justin Caffee and Corey LeMaster each added six points, and Grant Moser scored four.

The Starfires will look to stop the skid when they play their first road game of the season Tuesday at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers at 6 p.m.

Loramie edges Recovery

FORT RECOVERY — Saturday’s battle of the Forts was a close one, but Fort Loramie’s freshman girls basketball team edged Fort Recovery 20-18.

Fort Loramie took control in the first quarter, grabbing a 9-3 lead. The Indians battled back to within two points with one period to play, but could not complete the rally.

Leanne Tobin led the Tribe with eight points. Beth May scored five points, and Jen Nietfeld added four.

Rollers split with Marion

The Jay County High Rollers boys bowling team took its first loss of the season against Marion Wednesday, but bounced back to beat the same team 13-7 Saturday. The girls team lost to Norwell by the total-pin tiebreaker after finishing in a 10-10 tie Saturday.

The boys team’s victory improved it to 5-1 on the year, which is good for a tie for first place in the Hoosier Conference with South Adams. The High Rollers’ first loss Wednesday to Marion came by a 15-5 margin, with Cody Wright rolling a high series of 419 in the defeat.

Norwell tossed back-to-back strikes to tie the girls match, and took the tiebreaker 1,640-1,583. Jay County had also lost on a tiebreaker to Marion Wednesday by a 1,422-1,334 count. They were led by Summer Roush with a 345 series in Wednesday’s match.

The junior varsity earned its first win Wednesday by a 19-1 score over Bluffton, then pulled even at 2-2 with a 12-8 win over Marion Saturday. Kyle Blowers and Andrew Storie powered the Wednesday win with scores of 368 and 361 respectively.

SA girls cagers fall again

BLUFFTON — The South Adams girls basketball team got some offense, but not enough for a victory as it lost its 11th straight game by a 64-57 score to the Bluffton Tigers.

The Starfires (0-4) got a huge effort from Erin McCollum, who hit seven of her 10 3-point attempts. She scored 12 of her game-high 26 points in the second quarter.

Despite McCollum’s effort, South Adams still trailed by a 30-21 mark at halftime and couldn’t pull off a second-half comeback despite scoring 18 points in each of the final two quarters.

Kindle Inniger hit all of her five free throws to finish behind McCollum with 14 points. Julie Muhlenkamp scored 11 points and also had eight rebounds. Inniger had three rebounds and three assists, and JoLyn Yoder also grabbed three boards.

Jeni Johnson powered Bluffton with 17 points. Katie Vanderkolk had 16, and Kylie Marah finished with 11.

South Adams will return home Saturday to try for their first win when they play Heritage at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
