Celina hosting softball clinic (07/29/03)

There will be a softball pitching camp for girls ages 8-18 in Celina this week.

The two-day camp will be Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of the camp is $90.

Also, the Blackford Thunder baseball team will host a 10-and-younger baseball tournament August 7. The entry fee is $150 per team, which guaruntees three games to be played at the Hartford City Little League fields.

Missiles, Flames win titles

The Jay Community Center’s Small-sided Summer Soccer League finished its regular season Saturday with the Red Missiles and the Red Flames claiming league championships.

It was a rough day for the Missiles as they suffered their only loss of the season, but they still had the best record in the 19-12-year-old division at 5-1. They lost to the Gold Olympians, 12-0.

Derek Bartlett and Colton Bartlett each had four goals in the shutout for the Olympians. Joe Imel scored three times, and Austin Bentz had one goal.

In other 9-12-year-old games, the Orange Swift topped the Green Force 8-1 and the Blue Dodgers defeated the Gray Storm 7-1.

Luke Elliott had five goals for the Swift, Kazuki Saruta scored twice, and Tevan Green scored once.

Leah Wellman had three goals for the Dodgers, and Kylie Wellman and Brianne Wellman each added two. Emily Bibbs scored once for the Storm.

The Flames defeated the Blue Thunder 4-2 to finish 5-0-1 in the 7-8-year-old division. In the other 7-8-year-old game the Gold Niners defeated the Purple Smash 3-2.

Kaelen Jewell and Maddie Bailey each scored twice as the Flames took the title. Jordan Wolford and Eli Strouse each had one goal for the Thunderbirds.

The Niners got a couple of goals, including the game winner, from Zach Fullenkamp, and Sam Compton scored once. Robert Cooper had two goals for the Smash.

Fall practices scheduled

With the start of the fall sports season just a few weeks away, Jay County has released it’s practice start dates for the year.

The girls golf team will lead off the year, hitting the links for the first time Friday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. All other teams are scheduled to begin practicing Monday.

The cross country teams will begin running at 7:30 a.m., and the football team will start at 8 a.m. The girls soccer team will practice from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.

The boys tennis team will practice at 9 a.m., and the boys soccer team will practice from 4 to 7 p.m. The practice schedule for the volleyball team has not yet been released.

Pool passes discounted

Season Passes for the Portland Pool are now half price and the discounted price will last through the rest of the swim season.

Season passes are now $25 for a single pass, $42.50 for a family pass for two to three members and $50 for a family of four or more.

Hours will be 12:30 until 5 p.m. during the week of the Jay County Fair. For all other regular weeks, hours will remain 12:30 to 8 p.m.

Junior League banquet

Portland Junior League will hold its post-season banquet Monday, Aug. 11. The banquet will be at the Portland Moose Lodge beginning at 6 p.m.

Golf outing

The Portland Country Club Women’s Association will hold it’s Rally for a Cure golf outing next month.
