It would be difficult to find two more evenly-matched players, or evenly-matched teams, in the state of Indiana.

Jay County got the better of both match-ups Monday.

Trisha Champ racked up seven pars in the first eight holes on the way to a 3-over-par 39 to lead the host Patriots to a 195-204 victory over the Anderson Highland Scots at Portland Golf Club.

Champ and fellow senior Katie Windlan of Highland, and their teams, have been in a tight battle for the past several seasons.

In each of the last two Olympic Athletic Conference tournaments, Windlan has taken the title with Champ in second place. In regular-season matches, Champ took medalist honors by one stroke in 2005, then Windlan returned the favor in 2006.

The teams have been similarly well-matched. Jay County has finished just ahead of the Scots in the OAC tournament in each of the last two seasons, but Highland had won the last two regular-season duals - each by a single stroke.

"This is nice to get a 'W', and it makes us 2-0," said JCHS assistant coach Rayma Frankenfield. "That's a nice start.

"It's great to win against a conference team."

Champ out-dueled her chief rival for the OAC championship, racking up six pars in the first seven holes. The biggest swing came on the par-4 fourth hole.

Both players expertly cut the corner over the corn field on the dog-leg left, leaving themselves with approach shots well inside 100 yards.

Champ left her second shot just slightly short of the green, but finished off her par while Windlan (42) struggled with the sloping green. The Highland senior hit her first uphill putt past the hole, then missed again coming back.

She was left with a 10-footer coming back up the hill, and narrowly missed that before tapping in for a double-bogey. The two-shot swing put Champ in control - she further solidified her lead with a long par-saving putt on the sixth hole after Windlan went out of bounds - and she held onto the lead despite struggles on the final two holes.

"Trisha plays well, like any good golfer, when she hits greens in regulation," said Frankenfield. "Today she didn't have any birdies and she had a couple bad holes to shoot that 39, but she was hitting greens. And she said she didn't putt all that great.

"Trisha could easily be under par. (She) has more talent than the majority of the players in high school golf right now."

Champ was backed by solid rounds from Ivy Simons, Rachel Osterholt and Cara Garringer.

Simons got off to a very good start on the first four holes with a par on the 113-year, par-3 second and bogies on each of the other three. She continued to play well tee-to-green, but struggled with her putts as she finished with a 50.

"Like I said to her, the area where you're going to make the fastest improvement is the short game," said Frankenfield. "She shot a 50 with 24 putts, that's six more than regulation. Obviously that just means that very quickly she could easily be in the 40s consistently."

Osterholt played her typical even-keel round for a 52. She posted bogies on the 284-yard, par-4 third hole and the 401-yard, par-5 sixth.

Garringer opened with back-to-back bogies, then added another on the 349-yard, par-4 fifth as she shot a round of 54.

Jennifer Hunt struggled overall, but finished her round with a flourish as she chipped in from the right-front edge of the green for a par on the 348-yard, par-4 ninth.

The 195 for nine holes was 18 strokes better than the Patriots' first dual meet at Tri. The top nine-hole score for JCHS all of last season was a 190 on the front nine at the OAC tournament.

"I think across the board we need to work on confidence," said Frankenfield of what it will take for the team to continue its track record of improvement. "That's a big part of it, and you get that from practice."

Junior varsity

Jay County's players posted a 239 while the Scots did not have enough players for a full team score.

Freshman Macey Gerber had the top tally for the Patriots, a 56 that included a birdie on No. 3. She also had bogies on the first, sixth and ninth holes.

Brittany Schlater finished at 58, and Alex Bunch shot a 60. Amy Nichols finished with a 65, and Holly Rittenhouse was one stroke behind at 66.[[In-content Ad]]
