East Jay girls overpower HC (05/06/03)

East Jay’s girls track teams dominated Hartford City Monday, while the boys teams split their results.

The girls A team won every event on the way to a 90-10 blowout, while the B team lost just one event in a 94-5 victory. The boys A team took a 57-43 defeat, but the boys B team came in with a 75-25 victory.

Leading the charge for the girls A team was Nicole Pfeifer, who won three events. She was followed by Amanda Johnson with a pair of victories.

Pfeifer took care of the sprints for the Chiefs, winning the 100-meter dash in 14.04 and taking the 200-meter dash in 29.24. She also came away with a field-event win, taking the discus with a toss of 74 feet.

Johnson did the damage for East Jay in the long distance races. She won the 800-meter run in 2:56, and took the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:20.

Other individual wins for the Chiefs came from Mandy Theurer in the hurdles (19.73), Allison Fullenkamp in the 400-meter dash (1:08), Jamie Kaufman in the shot put (27 feet, five inches), Erica Clark in the long jump (13 feet, 1.5 inches) and Cassandra Huelskamp in the high jump (four feet, six inches).

The girls B team got two wins apiece out of Samantha Freeman. She took first in the shot put at 21 feet, 11.5 inches, and was the discus winner at 52 feet, 11 inches.

East Jay swept the field events with Tequila Guntle first in the long jump at 10 feet, nine inches, and Lauren Edmundson winning the high jump with a leap of four feet.

In the sprints, Caitlin Dunn took the 100-meter dash in 15.46, Amber Edmundson won the 200-meter dash in 31.01 and Dana Horn was first in the 100-meter dash in 1:11.

Tiffany Bickel took the hurdles with a time of 20.08, and Rose Weaver was first in the 800-meter run in 3:00.

The boys A team got four individual wins, two of which came in the distance races. Edwin Clott won the 800-meter run in 2:35, and Justin Hall was first in the 1600-meter run in 5:51.

Mason Shreeve added a victory in the hurdles in 17.96, and Kaleb Carpenter took the high jump.

Nick Martyne and Clint Muhlenkamp took control for the boys B team, each winning a pair of events.

Martyne was first in the 100-meter dash in 13.62, and he also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:09. Muhlenkamp picked up his first win in the long jump at 15 feet, one-quarter inch, and took the 1600-meter run in 6:08.

Other individual wins came from Jake Lyons in the hurdles (19.81), Justin Hall in the 800-meter run (2:53), Ben Wellman in the 200-meter dash (27.84), Dusten Hilfiker in the shot put (33 feet, one-half inch) and Michael Jobe in the high jump (five feet, one inch).

WJ girls win, boys fall

The West Jay girls track team rolled over Montpelier for an 82-27 win Monday, but the boys team suffered a 73-36 defeat.

Jessica Mosier and Trisha Champ each had two wins for the girls team.

Mosier owned the distances for the girls team, winning the 800-meter run in 3:06 and the 1600-meter run in 6:34. Champ won the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.13, and also took the high jump at four feet, three inches.

Lexie Easton was first in the 400-meter dash in 1:17, Sara Garringer won the discus with a toss of 74 feet, four inches and LeeAnn Blumenhurst took the long jump at 11 feet, 11 inches.

Ryan Sutton earned two of the three victories for the boys team. He was first in the 200-meter dash in 27.1, and took the long jump at 15 feet, seven inches.

Josh Selvey won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56.

Bye places ninth

Caleb Bye took part in the East Junior Olympic National Diving Championships in Bloomington recently, placing ninth in the one-meter competition and 16th in the three-meter.

Bye reached his goal of a top-12 finish in the one-meter — which earned him a medal — taking ninth out of 29 divers.

He was the leader after four rounds of diving in the three-meter competition before slipping to 16th out of 30. It was just his second competition at the three-meter height.

Bye qualified for the event with his third place finish in the three-meter and second place in the one-meter as the Regional IV Diving Championships in North Carolina last month.

Fort athletes awarded

Tyler Niekamp and Crystal Guggenbiller were honored Monday night at Fort Recovery’s scholastic awards banquet.

They each received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award. It is given each year to athletes who display outstanding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity within in the school and community.

Also honored were Greg Snyder and Monica Ranly as this year’s OHSAA scholar athletes. To receive the award, candidates must have the highest GPA at the end of their first semester of their senior year, and must have earned at least four varsity letters.

East Jay wins pair

East Jay’s baseball team improved to 3-0 with a pair of victories Saturday. It defeated Muncie Central 8-3, and then topped Cowan 13-3.

East Jay grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Muncie Central and never trailed. The lead was cut to 4-3 in the fifth inning, but East Jay scored four times in the seventh to put the game away.

Michael Jobe had a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Casey Waters and Derek Mills added two hits apiece. Josh Ludy and Kaleb Carpenter each had a single and an RBI.

Carpenter got the victory, and Waters tossed three innings of relief.

East Jay also led all the way against Cowan, going up 4-2 and then scoring seven times in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
