Fort Recovery gets back on track against Tigers (09/16/03)

These Tigers were no match for the Fort Recovery volleyball team.

The Indians (6-3) lost a heart-breaking match to Versailles’ Tigers last week, but would not do the same at Ansonia Monday. The Tribe downed this week’s orange-and-black opponent with relative ease, 15-6, 15-7.

Joscie Kaup had 15 assists and seven points to lead the Indians. She added nine digs and three kills

The Tribe also got six assists and six points from Jennalee Post, playing in place of the injured Olivia Post.

Briget Metzger had a team-best eight kills, and rejected four Tiger attacks. Jenn Stahl had five blocks, and Julie Grube had four blocks and nine digs. Krystal Rammel paced the team with eight points, and Tiff Gaerke had five kills.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team stayed unbeaten at 6-0 with a 15-2, 15-8 victory over Ansonia.

Vicki Roessner notched team highs with 11 points, eight assists and five digs. Kristen Schwieterman scored six points, five of which came on aces.

Jennalee Post also had a big JV match, finishing with four kills and five assists. Brenda Rindler, Julie Link and Kelly Link each had a pair of kills.

Jackie Wenning finished with five digs, and Rindler added four.

The Indians will return to Midwest Athletic Conference action at home Thursday against New Knoxville at 6 p.m.

Morrical, Geesaman make mark

The Jay County girls golf team placed fourth in the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Monday, but a couple of solid efforts earned honors for two Patriots.

Brianne Morrical shot by far her best round of the year, finishing eighth overall with a 103. Cara Geesaman rallied on the back nine for a 110, good for 10th overall as both earned OAC All-Conference honorable mention.

Jay County scored a 457, which was good enough to outdistance host Muncie Southside (486). Huntington North dominated the meet with a 347, Anderson Highland was second (385) and Connersville took third (420).

Morrical was consistent all the way through, shooting a 52 on the front nine. She stayed on her game with a 51 on the back to complete a personal-best score for both nine and 18 holes.

Geesaman shot a 58 on the front nine before staging her comeback. She rolled in one stroke behind Morrical on the second half with a 52.

Also, Deanna Drinkut shot a 116, Blake Hendricks scored a 128 and Angie Stultz finished at 132.

Jay County plays today against Blackford and Southern Wells at 4:30 p.m.

Starfires fall in four

Every game was close, but the South Adams volleyball team couldn’t quite close them out in the end in a 21-18, 19-21, 23-21, 21-15 loss to the Parkway Panthers Monday.

Senior Kelly Mertz had another big match for the Starfires. She finished with 18 kills and 12 digs.

Alyssa Miller put up 31 assists, and Robyn Habegger had 16 digs. Lee Ann Snyder finished with four kills, and Renee Neuenschwander added three aces.

South Adams hosts Southern Wells today at 6 p.m.

Fort, EJ spikers split

East Jay dropped the first game Monday before rallying to a 10-15, 15-11, 15-9 win over Fort Recovery in eighth grade volleyball action. The Indians won an awesome seventh grade battle 16-18, 16-14, 15-13.

Kinsey Wenning racked up 20 points to go along with a block and three digs for the Tribe (4-3) as all three seventh grade games went down to the wire. Chelsea Klenke followed with 12 points and nine sets, and Joanna Snyder had eight sets.

Anne Koesters notched a team-best three kills, and Kelly Thien added two.

Alyssa Myers scored 10 points as the victory improved the eighth grade Chiefs to 3-1. Stephanie Wellman was a perfect 11-for-11 serving, including three aces.

Jill Pottkotter had nine points, four kills and two blocks as the Indian eighth graders dropped to 4-3. Ashley Grube also had four kills and two blocks.

Angie Wenning and Heather Schmackers each scored seven points. Schmackers finished with 28 assists, and Beth May had 12.

Tribe freshman lose

The Fort Recovery freshman football team took a 24-8 loss against Delphos Jefferson Monday.

Matt Tobe scored the Indians’ lone touchdown on a 2-yard run. Tony Diller scored on the 2-point conversion.

Jay struggles in Valley

Jay County’s volleyball team had a rough time at the Tippecanoe Valley Invitational Saturday, losing matches to Norwell, Knox and the host Vikings.

Sara Hough paced the team in all three matches. She finished with 23 kills, 36 digs and seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
