Fort Recovery spikers power past Blue Jays (10/01/04)

DELPHOS, Ohio — Twice the Tribe has suffered back-to-back losses, and twice it has responded with back-to-back wins.

The Fort Recovery volleyball team picked up its second straight victory Thursday, topping the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays 25-12, 25-19, 25-12 Thursday.

Sophomore middle hitter Tiff Gaerke again carried the load for the Tribe, racking up team highs of 17 kills and 13 blocks. She also had eight digs and four points.

Junior setter Jennalee Post also reached double digits in blocks with 10, and dished out 27 assists. She scored 12 points, half of which came on aces, for the Indians (9-5, 3-2 Midwest Athletic Conference).

Krystal Rammel scored 13 points and added four kills, Vicki Roessner had eight points and 11 digs and Holly Stein had eight points and five kills. Rachel Brackman finished with 11 digs, and Megan Wenning had five kills.

The Indians will play in the Crestview Invitational — which includes the Division III No. 10 host Knights — Saturday at 9 a.m.

Fort Recovery also won the junior varsity match against St. Johns, 25-17, 25-21.

Jodi Tobe and Rachel Stahl shared a team high with nine points apiece for the Indians (9-2, 3-2 MAC). Tobe also finished with seven digs and two kills.

Lauren Wenning had nine kills, six digs and five points. Sarah Braun had eight kills and three blocks, and Abby Niekamp put up 19 assists.

The Tribe freshman team (8-1) was also in action Thursday, dropping the visiting Van Wert Cougars 25-16, 25-5.

Ashley Grube scored more than half of Fort Recovery’s service points, finishing with 16. She added five digs and four kills.

Angie Wenning finished with seven digs and five assists, and LeAnne Tobin also had seven digs. Jill Pottkotter had five kills and two blocks, and Heather Schmackers notched five digs.

SA volleyball beats Bluffton

BLUFFTON — South Adams’ volleyball team picked up its fourth victory of the season Thursday and third in the Allen County Athletic Conference, topping the Bluffton Tigers 31-29, 25-18, 26-24.

Renee Neuenschwander had nine kills and eight digs to lead the Starfires to 3-3 in the ACAC. She also had four aces.

Tamara Moser had seven kills and three blocks, and Brooke Fox added eight digs. Alyssa Miller finished with 22 assists, Lacy Rhoades had five kills and Kara Ross and Andrea Moser each had two blocks.

South Adams lost the junior varsity match 25-15, 14-25, 25-20, but won in freshman action 25-17, 25-17.

FR 7th grade gridders win

FORT RECOVERY — A fourth-quarter touchdown lifted the Fort Recovery seventh grade football team to a 14-6 victory over the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays Thursday. The eighth grade team scored in each of the final three quarters, but still fell to a 26-22 defeat.

The Indians (2-1) and the Blue Jays were tied at six in the seventh grade game, but Josh Wendel ran in a 3-yard touchdown in the final period. Cory Feely scored the two-point conversion as the Tribe took the victory.

The other Fort Recovery touchdown came on a 19-yard run by Ethan Schoenherr in the second quarter.

The eighth grade team got its offense going, but could not overcome the 18 points the Blue Jays put on the board in the second quarter.

Wes Kahlig scored the first Tribe touchdown, running to the end zone from 28-yards out in the second quarter. Kevin Fullenkamp added a 3-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Erick Schmitz caught two-point conversion passes from Toby Metzger after each of the first two Tribe scores.

Metzger added a 14-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but St. Johns also scored in the final period to take the victory.[[In-content Ad]]
