ROCKFORD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team continued its outstanding season this weekend, finishing 2-1 at the Parkway Invitational.

The loss — 25-16, 25-25, 15-13 in a tight match to St. Henry — was just the second of the year for the Indians. They also defeated Botkins 25-8, 25-10 and topped Marion Local 25-16, 25-23.

Jill Pottkotter had a pair of team highs for the Tribe with 11 kills and nine blocks for the day. Ashley Grube finished second on the team for Fort Recovery (13-2) with 20 digs, 18 points and 10 kills.

Amy Schoenlein had 21 points, and Beth May came away with 26 digs. Heather Schmackers had 20 assists, and Angie Wenning added 15 assists.

JC JV boys soccer wins

MUNCIE — Jay County’s junior varsity boys soccer team capped its season on a winning note.

The Patriots played their final game Saturday, scoring a 1-0 victory over Muncie Central.

Ryan Wellman scored the lone goal for Jay County, putting the ball in the net on a penalty kick at the 14:02 mark of the second half. Kyle Laux and Luke Darby each had three shots on goal for the Patriots.

Teaming for the shutout were Austin May and Woo Ram Lee, who each recorded two saves.

Jay spikers go 0-5

PORTLAND — The freshman team went on the road to play in the Southwood Invitational while the junior varsity team stayed home to host the JV Olympic Athletic Conference tournament. But, both volleyball teams went winless on the weekend.

The Patriot junior varsity team was 0-2 in the OAC tournament, losing a couple of three-game matches — 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 to Muncie Southside and 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 to Connersville. The freshmen dropped 25-17, 25-20 to Tippecanoe Valley, 25-20, 25-10 to Whitko and 25-10, 25-11 to Maconaquah at Southwood.

Ashley Horn paced the JV Patriots in both matches, scoring 14 points against Southside and 13 versus Connersville. She finished with seven aces.

Erica Clark also had seven aces, six of which came as she scored six points in the Connersville match. Shelby Rines had six points against Connersville and nine against Southside, and Maria Miller added 11 points against Southside.

Stephanie Wellman paced the freshman team with nine points, including two aces against Tippecanoe Valley. Sarah Mescher added three points and one kill.

Mescher had a trio of aces against Whitko, Wellman scored two points and Brittany O’Dell added two kills. O’Dell posted three points, including an ace, and one kill versus Maconaquah, and Sharon Dirksen added two points.

Eagle gridders roll

DUNKIRK — Jon Hawn tossed a pair of touchdown passes, leading the West Jay eighth grade football team to a 28-6 victory over Salamonie Saturday. The seventh graders also won its final game of the season over Salamonoie, 14-6.

Hawn threw for touchdowns to Blake Price and Greg Cox. Andrew Lancaster added a 50-yard touchdown run, and Alan Brown had a 10-yard scoring run.

Brown and Shay White each ran in for a two-point conversion.

Cox had an interception, and Blake Stout came up with a fumble recovery.

Josh Beatty got the scoring started in the seventh grade game with a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He also ran for the two-point conversion.

Salamonie cut the lead for 8-6 before halftime, but the defense shut it down in the second half. Drew Locke scored on a 7-yard run for West Jay (3-3-2) in the third quarter for the final margin.

Locke also had a fumble recovery and an interception. Taylor Farmer had a fumble recovery, and Dustin Easton picked off a pass.

Basketball league

The Jay Community Center is currently accepting registrations for its fall youth basketball league.

The league is for boys and girls from pre-school (4 years old) through sixth grade. Games will be played on Saturdays, beginning Nov. 6.

The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 15 for early bird registration and Friday Oct. 22 for final registration. Forms are available at the community center.
