Freshman Moser leads the Starfires (10/05/04)

Local Roundup

UNION CITY — It took a long time, but the Starfires finally did it.

With a hard-fought 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 15-6 victory over the Union City Indians Monday, the South Adams volleyball team won back-to-back dual matches for the first time all season.

The Starfires, who also won at Bluffton Thursday, fought off a great effort from Union City thanks in part to Andrea Moser’s best match of the season.

Moser, a freshman middle hitter, finished with team highs of eight kills and six blocks. She also had a pair of aces.

Renee Neuenschwander and Brooke Fox also contributed eight kills apiece. Neuenschwander added five aces.

Alyssa Miller finished with 31 assists and two aces, and Kara Ross had four blocks. Robyn Habegger finished with 10 digs, and Danielle Roman notched eight digs.

South Adams also defeated Union City in junior varsity action, 25-21, 25-17. It will play in the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament beginning Wednesday at 6 p.m.

JC JV gridders lose

PORTLAND — There was nothing offensive about Jay County’s junior varsity football game Monday.

The Patriots entertained the Anderson Highland Scots, losing a defensive battle 3-0.

Neither team scored for the first 45 minutes of the contest before Highland booted the game-winning field goal — a 23-yarder — with 2:04 to play.

The teams managed just 234 yards of total offense combined, with the Patriots getting just 82 of that total. The Scots got 152 of their 177 yards in the first half.

A majority of Jay County’s offensive drives were stopped by turnovers as it gave the ball away on six fumbles and two interceptions. Highland fumbled twice, but lost only two of them.

Alex Michael led the Patriot defense with 10 tackles, and Andy Hughes and Kaleb Carpenter each had nine. Carpenter added a fumble recovery and a blocked punt, and Michael also had a fumble recovery.
