CONVOY, Ohio — Tiff Gaerke impressed an outstanding tournament field Saturday as the Tribe played some of its best volleyball of the season.

Gaerke, a Fort Recovery sophomore, played so well among a group of state-title contending teams that she was named the most valuable player at the Crestview Invitational Saturday.

It was a good day for the Indians overall, despite finishing 1-2. They avenged a loss, then continued to prove they deserve to be talked about as one of the best teams in the state. In two states, in fact.

Fort Recovery first defeated Old Fort, a team it lost to in three games at the St. Mary’s Invitational earlier in the season, 17-25, 25-13, 15-9. Old Fort was 17th in last week’s Division IV poll voting.

The Tribe then gave a pair of state-ranked teams everything they could handle, falling 25-21, 25-27 to Division IV No. 9 Norwalk St. Paul and 27-25, 25-21 to Indiana’s Class 3A No. 2 Fort Wayne Concordia.

Tiff Gaerke and Jennalee Post led the victory over Old Fort.

Gaerke racked up team highs of 17 kills, nine points and seven digs. Post matched the total of seven digs, and added 27 assists to go along with two blocks, one kill and one point.

Krystal Rammel reached double-digits with 10 kills. She also notched a team-high six blocks and scored six points.

Holly Stein had seven points and five digs, Megan Wenning had six points and three blocks and Rachel Brackman added five digs.

Gaerke and Rammel kept the Tribe (10-7) in the match against St. Paul. Gaerke had 11 kills, 13 digs, six points and three blocks, and Rammel finished with 11 blocks, nine kills, four points and two digs.

Post put up 23 assists and added five digs, and Vicki Roessner notched four blocks.

Rammel went for seven digs, seven blocks and four kills against Concordia, and Gaerke had eight kills and five blocks. Wenning posted 10 points and four kills.

Post had 19 assists, including one ace, and six points, and Brackman had nine digs.

Fort JV wins pair

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity volleyball team won both of its matches Saturday as it hosted Ansonia and Fort Loramie. The Indians crushed Ansonia for the second time this year, 25-5, 25-10, and topped Fort Loramie 25-20, 25-18 to improve to 11-2.

Abby Niekamp and Rachel Stahl paced the victory over Ansonia, with Niekamp tallying 17 assists, six points and one kill. Stahl racked up 11 points and two digs.

Lauren Wenning had eight kills, followed by Sarah Braun with six and Alicia Schwieterman with five. Lori Osterholt scored eight points, and Brittany Brackman had five digs.

Niekamp added six points and 21 assists against Fort Loramie. Most of those sets went to Wenning, who smashed 15 kills.

Braun had six kills and two blocks, and Osterholt scored six points. Brackman had six digs, and Schwieterman scored five points.
