Gaerke powers Indians in season-opening match (09/02/04)

UNION CITY, Ohio — Tiff Gaerke might like her new position.

Making the move to middle hitter this year after the graduation of Briget Metzger and Jenn Stahl, Gaerke opened the season with a dominant effort Tuesday as the Fort Recovery volleyball team trounced the Mississinawa Valley Indians 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.

Gaerke, a sophomore, racked up a match-high 17 kills to lead the Indians. She also came away with five blocks.

Jennalee Post notched team highs of 20 assists and 11 points, four of which came on aces. Returning attack leader Krystal Rammel had eight kills, two blocks and three aces, and Megan Wenning scored 10 points.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team rolled over Mississinawa Valley for a 25-15, 25-22 win.

Rachel Stahl, Alicia Schwieterman, Lauren Wenning and Abby Niekamp each had two kills in the victory. Wenning posted nine points, Schwieterman scored six points and Niekamp notched six assists.

Lori Osterholt added seven points.

Fort Recovery will host Parkway Thursday at 6 p.m.

The junior high Indians played the Parkway Panthers Tuesday, with the eighth grade team rallying for a 19-25, 25-15, 15-11 victory. The seventh graders lost 25-18, 25-8.

Kinsey Wenning carried the eighth grade team as she shared team highs in kills, digs, and blocks with four, two and one respectively. She also had eight points.

Rachel Tobe scored 11 points, and Anne Koesters matched Wenning with four kills and a block. Kelly Sudhoff had two digs.

Kelsey Wuebker and Chelsea Klenke each put up four assists.

Nicole Pottkotter had five points for the seventh grade team, and Josie Guggenbiller finished with three points and a dig. Lindsay Fullenkamp and Emily May each had two digs, and Emily Link added one kill.

Starfires spikers fall

MONROE — The South Adams volleyball team slipped to 1-7 on the year with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 loss to the Class 2A No. 4 Adams Central Jets Tuesday. They Starfires are 1-3 in the Allen County Athletic Conference.

Junior setter Alyssa Miller paced South Adams in kills as she finished with five. She also had 10 assists.

Renee Neuenschwander had four kills and six digs, and Robyn Habegger had seven digs. Brooke Fox and Kara Ross each recorded one block.

The Starfires dropped the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-13. They also lost in freshman action by a score of 25-13, 25-9.

South Adams host Oak Hill Thursday at 6 p.m.

Huelskamp leads FR CC

CELINA — The Fort Recovery boys cross country team placed three runners in the top 20 at the Mercer County Invitational Tuesday.

Derrick Huelskamp paced the Indians with an eighth place finish. Mitch Fullenkamp came in 12th, and Austin Burkhardt was 19th.

Also running for Fort Recovery were Jim Roessner (30th), Stan Roessner (31st), Steve Gaerke (33rd), Matt Heinrichs (54th) and Tyler Huelskamp (58th).

Lindsay Sudhoff was the top finisher for the girls team in 30th. She was followed by Marisa Minor in 44th, Sam Bihn in 45th and Leanne Pottkotter in 46th.

The Indians will run in the Kiwanis Treaty City Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
