Heitkamp homer carries Fort (04/15/03)

Greg Heitkamp gave the Indians the lift they needed to get over the .500 mark for the first time this year.

The catcher blasted a three-run home run in the third inning to give Fort Recovery the lead, and it went on to a 5-3 victory over Franklin Monroe Monday. The win pushed the Tribe’s record to 5-4 on the year.

The Indians and the Jets were tied at 1-1 after two innings when Heitkamp took control. He knocked his home run with Greg Snyder and Dusty Guggenbiller on base for the 4-1 advantage.

Fort Recovery added one more run in the fifth inning and held off a late Franklin Monroe charge.

Heitkamp finished with a pair of hits, a run and three RBIs. Snyder and Nate Sudhoff each had two hits, and Snyder and Guggenbiller scored two runs apiece.

Todd post pitched five innings for the win, giving up one unearned run on six hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Snyder tossed the final two innings for the save. He gave up a pair of unearned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

The Indians play at New Knoxville today at 5 p.m.

Starfires trample Wayne

Fort Wayne Wayne took a severe beating at the hands of the South Adams girls track team Monday as the Starfires took a 103-20 victory.

South Adams (1-1) won all three relays and swept the top three finishing spots in six events Monday for the big victory. A different Starfire athlete accounted for each of the team’s nine individual victories.

Both hurdle events went to South Adams, as Jenny Lehman won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 and Chelsey Minnich was first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 57.1. It also won three field events with Erin Kruse first in the shot put (32 feet, four inches), Hannah Lautzenheiser winning the discus (91 feet, two inches) and Laura Meshberger taking the long jump (14 feet, six inches).

The Starfires also took all of the dashes, with Lori Lichtenberg first in the 100-meter dash in 14.06, Casey Gentis first in the 200-meter dash in 29.8 and Jenna Stauffer first in the 400-meter dash in 1:09.8.

Kristen Whitehurst added a victory in the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:03.

The South Adams boys and girls track teams will host Union City and Wapahani Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

SA wins first

South Adams’ top three hitters took care of everything Monday and carried the Starfires to their first victory of the year, a 7-6 triumph over Southern Wells.

Justin Haines, Kyle Neuenschwander and Jeremiah Kaeser accounted for all of the team’s seven hits, six of its seven runs and six of its seven RBIs in the win.

Kaeser had the biggest day of all, finishing 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs. He scored twice and drove in four runs.

Neuenschwander went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.

He also picked up the victory in relief of Kaeser, allowing two runs — one earned — in 12/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Haines added another hit and scored a pair of runs.

South Adams will host Leo today at 5 p.m.

Stars edge Raiders

The South Adams softball team stayed unbeaten at 2-0 with a 2-1 victory over Southern Wells Wednesday.

The Starfires and the Raiders battled to a scoreless tie after seven innings, forcing an extra frame.

South Adams struck first in the top of the eighth, scoring twice with runs from Leesha Lichtenberg and Carrie Nichols. Southern Wells battled back with one run off of Mikeala Smith in the bottom of the frame, but couldn’t pull even.

Smith took the victory, allowing one unearned run in eight innings. She struck out three and walked two.

Jenni Riebolt had the lone Starfire RBI, and Jill Lehman had one stolen base.

South Adams will try to stay perfect when it plays Leo at home today at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
