Tyson charged
The Indiana Civil Rights Commission announced this week that it has probable cause to believe Tyson Foods, Inc., in Logansport, violated Indiana’s civil rights law.
The group stated the company allegedly fired a Hispanic supervisor for violation of a policy, but did not fire an American supervisor who violated the same policy.
A statement from the civil rights group stated on or about Feb. 8, 2013, an employee injured himself while using a machine at the Logansport location. The employee notified three supervisors about the incident and requested to go home instead of being examined by Tyson Foods medical personnel.
Tyson Foods policy and procedures state all employees involved in compensable injury are required to immediately submit to an alcohol/drug screening. The Hispanic supervisor and American supervisor allegedly agreed to allow the employee to go home without submitting to the screening.
Tyson Foods only fired the Hispanic supervisor following the incident, the commission stated, which shows probable cause of violating the civil rights law.
The state has concluded its preliminary investigation and determined there is sufficient evidence to support reasonable suspicion that the law has been violated.
