Horn homers help Loy to big win (06/20/03)

It didn’t take long for Loy Auction and Realty to grab the lead Thursday thanks to LeAnn Horn.

Horn led off her Portland Junior League Rookie League softball game against Coca-Cola with a home run, and Loy never looked back. It scored nine times in the first inning on the way to a 15-2 win.

In the other Rookie League softball game Thursday First National Bank hammered Graphic Printing 24-2.

Winchester defeated Portland Elks in Sandy Koufax League baseball action, and Redkey Lions topped Graphic Printing 13-7.

Willie Mays League games saw Portland Optimist pound PG-14 21-2, and Pak-A-Sak slam MainSource Bank 24-6.

Not only did Horn lead off the game for Loy with a home run, but she also finished off the scoring in the first inning with a second homer. She went 4-for-4 in the contest with three runs scored.

Jay edges Wells

A multitude of second, third and fourth-place finishes again lifted the Jay County Summer Swim Team to a victory Thursday as it defeated Wells Community 567-522.

Much like it’s win in the Wabash Valley Conference Relay Championships Saturday, Jay County lost a majority of the individual races. It took just 19 of the 60 individual events while splitting the 20 relays, but won the meet with its depth.

Nine of Jay’s 19 wins came from three individual triple-event winners: Cori Vormohr, Alysha Miller and Sam Miller.

Vormohr took first in the 11-12-year-old girls long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke. Sam Miller won the same three events in the same age group on the boys side.

Alysha Miller was also victorious in the long freestyle, and added wins in the butterfly and short freestyle.

The only swimmer to win a pair of events on the evening for Jay was Rachel Vogler in the 8-and-under girls division. She was first in the long freestyle and the short freestyle.

Other first-place finishers for Jay were Annie Vormohr, Lane Hull, Zane Shreve, A.J. Pettyjohn, Richard Osterholt, Shelby Rines, Brittany Teagle and Derrick Lee.

The team will swim in the Union City Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.

East Jay splits pair

The East Jay baseball team played in a couple of 10-0 shutouts recently, defeating Monroe Central Wednesday after a loss to Selma Monday.

Justin Mann and Casey Waters combined for a four-inning, three-hit shutout against Monroe Central.

Mann worked the first three innings, striking out three. Waters tossed one hitless inning and recorded one strikeout.

Waters also led the offense with three hits, including a double. Joshua Ludy, Michael Jobe, Aaron Wilhelm and Kyle Wellman each had a pair of hits in the contest.

Waters had the only hit in the shutout loss against Selma.
