Indians earn MAC win (09/19/03)

The Fort Recovery volleyball team ended a two-match Midwest Athletic Conference losing streak Thursday, smashing the New Knoxville Rangers 15-6, 15-10.

The Tribe (7-3, 2-3 MAC) had lost its previous two MAC matches to Division IV No. 2 Minster (9-0) and Versailles (7-2). Its other loss came to Division IV No. 7 Old Fort (8-1)

Joscie Kaup paced the team as it pulled back to within one game of .500 in the league.

She had nine assists and shared a team-high with Megan Wenning with five digs. Kaup also scored five points and had four kills.

Middle hitters Briget Metzger and Tiff Gaerke had five kills apiece. Metzger had five blocks, finishing one behind Jenn Stahl.

Wenning scored seven points, Renee Schmackers had five, and Jennalee Post put up six assists.

The Indians’ junior varsity team also beat New Knoxville, dominating the second game as it stayed perfect with a 15-5, 15-0 win.

Vicki Roessner had a dominating match for Fort Recovery (7-0, 4-0 MAC), leading the way with 11 points. She also had six assists, four kills, four digs and a pair of blocks.

Kristen Schwieterman served very well for the Tribe as she finished with eight points, four of which came on aces. Kelly Link led the team with five kills, and Jennalee Post had seven assists. Julie Link finished with seven digs, and Kelly Link had a trio of blocks.

Fort Recovery will play at Anna Saturday at 10 a.m.

Starfires win again

South Adams won its second straight volleyball match Thursday, defeating the Eastbrook Panthers 15-21, 25-23, 21-11, 21-19.

Kelly Mertz carried the offensive load for the Starfires (5-8), slamming down 14 kills. She also had five aces.

LeeAnn Snyder was next with seven kills and five blocks. Alyssa Miller notched 25 assists and 14 digs, and Robyn Habegger finished with 19 digs.

The South Adams junior varsity team lost 23-21, 21-16 to Eastbrook, and the freshman team rallied from an awful first game for a 5-21, 21-15, 21-14 victory.

The next match for the Starfires is at home Tuesday against Fort Wayne Bishop Luers at 6 p.m.

Fort crushes Union City

Fort Recovery’s middle school volleyball teams enjoyed their first rally scoring experience of the season as each squad scored a victory over Union City Thursday. The eighth grade team won 21-15, 21-16, while the seventh grade team scored a 21-8, 21-2 blowout.

Kinsey Wenning had a magnificent serving day for the seventh grade team (6-3), scoring 13 points, 10 of which came on aces. Betsy Tobe wasn’t far behind with 10 points, four of which came by way of the ace.

Wenning also had two kills to match Joanna Snyder for a team high. Snyder, Rachel Tobe and Chelsea Klenke each had a pair of sets, and Melissa Tobe and Jessica Braun recorded one dig apiece.

The eighth grade team (6-3) was led by Angie Wenning with seven points, seven sets, two blocks and two digs. Sarah Braun had four points.

Fort Recovery used a balanced offensive attack, with eight different players recording at least one kill. Ashley Grube had three, and Amy Schoenlein and LeAnne Tobin each added a pair.

Lindsey Fortkamp had three digs, and Grube and Schoenlein each had two. Grube and Schoenlein also had two blocks apiece, and Beth May put up six assists.[[In-content Ad]]
