Indians edge MAC-rival Minster (05/16/03)

A four-game skid came to an end for the Fort Recovery softball team Thursday as it defeated the Minster Wildcats 5-4.

The Indians (13-8, 4-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) and the Wildcats traded the lead early, and Fort Recovery went up 4-2 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Minster scored a run each in the fourth and fifth to even the score, but the Indians scored again in the sixth inning for the final margin.

Joscie Kaup powered the Fort Recovery offense in the win, going 3-for-4 with a double. She drove in a pair of runs, scored twice and stole a base.

Sarah Schmitz also had three hits with a double and an RBI, and Lisa Grisez had two hits, a double and two runs. Ciera Rammel and Julie Faller also had two hits apiece for the Tribe.

Schmitz earned the win, allowing four runs — one earned — on five hits. She struck out 10 and walked three.

Fort Recovery will play at home tonight against Crestview at 5 p.m.

Fort players honored

Several Fort Recovery baseball and softball players were named to the All-Midwest Athletic Conference teams which were released today.

Senior baseball players Greg Snyder and Greg Heitkamp, and softball senior Julie Faller and junior Joscie Kaup were first-team selections. Senior Sarah Schmitz and junior Lisa Grisez were second-team honorees in softball, and senior Eric Rindler was a second-teamer in baseball.

Senior Mark Knapke and junior C.J. Tobe earned honorable mention for baseball.

Stars stumble again

South Adams’ softball team just has to make sure this loss doesn’t spiral it into another long drought. After winning their first three, losing the next 10 and then winning two, the Starfires dropped a 9-1 decision to Woodlan Thursday.

South Adams (5-11, 2-8 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored its only run in the sixth inning, but by then was already trailing 5-0. Woodlan added four more runs in the bottom of the frame to pull away.

Jill Lehman had one hit, scored her team’s only run and added a stolen base. Carrie Nichols had a single and an RBI, and Andrea Kaehr also had a single.

Mickayla Smith took the loss, allowing nine runs — four earned — on nine hits. She walked three and struck out three.

Fort falls to Cardinals

The Fort Recovery baseball team managed just three hits Thursday in a 3-1 loss to the New Bremen Cardinals.

The Indians fell behind by giving up two runs in the first inning and one in the fourth. They scored once in the seventh, but didn’t have enough fire power for a comeback.

Greg Faller scored Fort Recovery’s only run, and Dusty Tobe had the lone RBI. Eric Rindler, Greg Snyder and C.J. Tobe had one hit apiece.

C.J. Tobe tossed six innings in the defeat, allowing three runs — one earned — on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three.

Indians’ JV stumbles

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team couldn’t keep up with the Minster Wildcats in an 8-2 defeat Thursday.

The Indians were down just 3-2 after five innings, but allowed a run in the sixth and four in the seventh in slipping to the loss. Jill Wehrkamp took the defeat in 52/3 innings.

Kelsie Will went 2-for-4 to lead the Tribe offense, notching a triple and a run. Kim Link had two hits and scored once.

Junior League

Portland Optimist defeated MainSource Bank in Portland Junior League Willie Mays League action Thursday 19-7.

Optimist got four hits from Brandon Kauffman, and Drew Wood, Dillon Ainsworth and Brian Walker each had three. Skyler Prescott added a pair of hits.

Drew Houck and Teedric Green each had two hits for MainSouce.[[In-content Ad]]
