Indians hold off New Knoxville (04/16/03)

Fort Roundup

Fort Recovery has found its offense.

After putting up 32 runs in a double-header this weekend and adding a victory Monday, the Indian baseball team won its first Midwest Athletic Conference game Tuesday 11-9. Fort Recovery did most of its damage in a seven-run second inning.

Greg Faller had the biggest offensive day for the Indians, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. He drove in three runs and scored twice.

Mark Knapke added two hits and two runs, and Greg Heitkamp also scored twice. Mitch Staugler had a double and two RBIs.

Eric Rindler evened his record on the year at 2-2, pitching 62/3 innings for the victory. He gave up nine runs — two earned — on 13 hits before being lifted in the seventh inning in favor of C.J. Tobe. Tobe ended the six-run New Knoxville rally with a strikeout to end the game, giving him his first save.

Fort Recovery (6-4, 1-0 MAC) plays a double-header at Tri County North Saturday at 11 a.m.

Niekamp notches record

Fort Recovery’s track team suffered a pair of losses Tuesday, but that wasn’t enough to overshadow the effort of Tyler Niekamp.

The senior had a tremendous meet for the Indians, giving the team half of its four wins. He also set a new school record in the high jump in the three-way meet against Franklin Monroe and Fairlawn.

The Fort Recovery boys team scored 67 points to finish in second place behind Franklin Monroe (89). Franklin Monroe also won the girls meet with a score of 109, Fairlawn was second (38.5) and Fort Recovery placed third (16).

Niekamp left the rest of the competition gazing up at him in the long jump as Scott Barnes of Franklin Monroe jumped six feet and placed second. That was not even close to Niekamp, who finished with his new Fort Recovery record of six feet, four inches.

Niekamp also led Fort Recovery as it finished 1-2-3 in the discus as he tossed 119 feet. David Willmann was second at 112 feet, seven inches, and Brandon Grieshop took third with a throw of 107 feet, 2.5 inches.

Willmann had the other individual Indian victory, winning the shot put by more than 10 inches at a distance of 45 feet, five inches. Mark Willmann, Shawn Stein, Dominick Post and Stan Roessner teamed to win the 400-meter relay in 49.72.

Kristi Westgerdes picked up the only victory for the girls team. She won the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, six inches.

Fort JV back to .500

The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team slipped back to the .500 mark with a 14-5 loss to Coldwater Tuesday.

The Indians (4-4) fell behind 8-2 early, before cutting the lead to 8-5 with three runs in the third inning. However, they did not score again, and Coldwater added six runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Kelsie Will had two hits, a run and a stolen base for the Indians. Jenna Thien doubled and scored a run.

Alyssa Tobe took the loss, allowing nine runs — four earned — on 10 hits in seven innings. She struck out nine and walked four.

In other games recently the Indians lost to Celina 14-6, and took both games of a double-header against Van Wert, 8-5 and 7-2.

Kristen Schwieterman had a pair of hits, two runs and a stolen base in the loss to Celina. She was also the top hitter in both wins over Van Wert, racking up five hits, two runs and two RBIs in the two-game set.

Fortkamp blanks FM

Franklin Monroe didn’t have any answer for freshman Brad Fortkamp Monday.

The Indian starter shut out the Jets 3-0, and Fort Recovery ended the game in style with a rare triple play.

With runners on first and second in the seventh inning, Franklin Monroe hit a line shot to Chris Galdeen at second base. He flipped to the shortstop who tagged second and tossed to first to finish the game.

Fortkamp allowed just one hit and threw only 66 pitches in the complete-game shutout. He struck out three batters.

Nick Schwieterman was the offensive leader, finishing with two hits. He had a double, two runs, one RBI and three stolen bases.

Galdeen and Steve Trobridge also had two hits each. Galdeen doubled and scored a run, and Trobridge had three stolen bases.[[In-content Ad]]
