CELINA, Ohio - Getting two runners in the top 10 Saturday was the requirement for being in contention. Both area girls teams did the job.

Jay County's Aly Miller and Amanda Johnson finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth in the Division I girls race at the Celina Rotary Invitational, while Tina Roessner and Mindy Vogel placed fourth and ninth respectively in the Division II/III competition.

The Patriot effort was good for second out of nine teams at Wright State University's Lake Campus with a total of 61 points. Jerome won the meet with 53 points, and Findlay was third with 76.

The Indians finished third among 11 teams with 96 points. Fort Loramie took the top spot with 42, 10 ahead of Coldwater.

Fort Recovery's all-freshman boys team placed 12th out of 15 teams with 335 points. St. Henry was first with 79, and Coldwater took second at 88.

With only four boys on the squad, Jay County did not post a team score as Findlay won with 28 points and the host Bulldogs were second with 47.

"I'm very pleased today," said JCHS coach Les Bantz. "I'm pretty proud. Everybody ran basically a better time than they did Tuesday (at the Bellmont Invitational). ... Overall it was a good race for us."

Miller and Roessner turned in the top efforts of the day, with the Patriot freshman holding the best time and the Indian junior the best placing.

Miller and Johnson, a senior, ran out to the front early, joining a couple of runners from Findlay in the lead group of four. They were fifth and sixth respectively by the mid-point of the race before Miller rallied into a battle for fourth only to fall short by a fraction of a second. She placed fifth in 21-minutes, 7 seconds, and Johnson fought through an illness to take sixth in 21:54.

Roessner continued her pattern of improvement for the Indians, building off the 2007 track season. She led the second pack early in the race in the fifth position overall, solidified her hold on that spot by the midway point of the race and then pushed to a solid fourth-place finish in 21:45.

"Tina last year in track she just had a phenomenal finish," said Fort Recovery coach Jason Grieshop. "The last month of the season each week she was faster and better than she was the week before. It's like she's really started to find her groove."

The Tribe's Mindy Vogel ran in front and held the lead for much of the early portion of the Division II/III race, but, much like Johnson, an illness caught up to her. She struggled through the second half, even falling at one point, but was still able to hobble across the finish line ninth in 22:34.

"Mindy obviously wasn't at her best today. She went out fast, she went out hard ... but it just wasn't meant to be," said Grieshop. "She gutted it out and worked hard and came through in a good place for us."

Leah Wellman came up big for Jay County as she gradually moved ahead throughout the race. She was in a group around 20th place at the start, but was all the way up to 14 halfway through the race and pushed to 11th at the finish in 22:40.

Bantz said it is always good for a team when a pair of freshman finish so well.

"I'm just extremely pleased with Aly and Leah," he said. "They're just running great."

Kylie Wellman, Leah's junior sister, finished 16th for the Patriots in 23:01, and Cassie Laux rounded out the team score in 23rd at 23:42.

Fort Recovery also had a pair of freshmen among its top five runners.

Alexis Sutter ran a solid race and made an impressive charge at the finish to edge Coldwater's Liz Crowell by one second for 25th place in 23:45. Senior Sam Bihn took 28th in 23:55, and freshman Abby Huelskamp placed 42nd with a time of 24:26.

"That was an unbelievable surprise today," said Grieshop of Sutter's first career race. "I know she's a good runner, but ... she ran a lot better today than she has in practice. It was a real pleasure to see. I don't think you could wipe the smile off her face right now."

The top time from the two boys teams came from Jay County's Tevan Nichols, who was 33rd in the Division I race at 19:49. Tribe freshman Ryan Heitkamp wasn't too far off that pace, as he also placed 33rd in Division II/III at 19:54.

Alan Vogel was 48th for the Indians in 20:14. The other three Tribe freshmen were Caleb Heitkamp (65th - 21:04), Aaron Will (138th - 24:54) and Zach Guggenbiller (141st - 25:08).

"The boys did pretty much what we expected," said Grieshop. "It's their first race running with people a lot older than them. ... They've got some catching up to do ... but as a group we looked pretty solid. ... They're only going to continue to improve."

Branden Brinton was 63rd for Jay County in 22:02. Jacob Heitkamp placed 75th in 22:58, and Joe Imel was 93rd at 25:02.

Junior high

Fort Recovery's girls matched their high school counterparts with a third-place finish at 116 points. Coldwater topped the 13-team field with 65 points, and Celina was second at 104.

The Tribe boys team scored 155 points for sixth out of 12 teams. Findlay was first with 65 points, just two ahead of Clay.

Nicole Heitkamp turned in the lone top-10 effort for the Indians, placing ninth in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 14:31. She was joined by Rachel Jutte (13th - 14:52), Christen Wendel (23rd - 15:15), Samantha Tobe (35th - 15:45) and Mariah Koester (45th - 16:29).

Mathias Koester led the Fort Recovery boys in 19th with a time of 13:20. Joining him in scoring for the team were Nathan Fullenkamp (33rd - 13:48), Derek Rammel (40th - 14:21), Adam Pohl (44th - 14:32) and Shawn Roessner (49th - 14:47).[[In-content Ad]]
