Jay County rolls over Squaws

Jay County’s tennis team got its season started Thursday with a 4-1 victory over the Bellmont Squaws.

The Patriots (1-0) built a quick lead, with Daniela Harringer and Kelly Hess rushing off the courts in straight sets. Each of them dropped just two games on the way to easy wins, with Harringer dropping Taryn Foley 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Hess downing Rachel Blakely 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

The rest wasn’t’ so easy.

Kristen Klatt stumbled in her first set of the year, taking a 6-4 loss to Holly Geyer. However, she rallied back for the victory and guaranteed Jay County the team win in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemenaur picked up a fourth victory, gutting out a two-hour marathon against Margaret Kunkel and Toni Saurez.

The Patriot pair took a tight first set 7-6 (7-5), but got blanked 6-0 in the second. Gaining confidence as they played, the determined duo pulled out the third set for a 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-4 victory.

Brittany Pinkerton and Erin St. Myers lost their match at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 7-5.

The Jay County junior varsity team took a 7-0 defeat to the Squaws Thursday.

Amanda Hicks lost at No. 1 singles to Melissa Hammond 6-2, 6-3, Stephanie Homan fell to Jasmine Ranly at No. 2 singles 8-2, and Brianne Morrical lost to Molly Martin at No. 3 singles 4-8.

In doubles action Niki Guntle and Julie Sours dropped an 8-6 decision to Jessica Bergdoll and Renee Rodriquez, and Chelsea Reef and Angie Stults lost to Chelsea Skramstaal and Niki Geyer 8-6.

In other JV matches Shonda Sutton took an 8-0 loss to Megan Martin and tied Lauren Zimmer 4-4. Jessica DeRome and Jenae Horn dropped a 6-5 decision to Amanda Geimer and Brittany McDougall.

Jay County hosts Marion Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Stars fall in seventh

South Adams looked set to start its season with a win, but New Haven foiled the Starfires’ plan with five seventh-inning runs to take the game 10-8.

Four first-inning runs, one in the fourth and three more in the sixth had South Adams sitting pretty, up 8-5. But it couldn’t hold onto the lead and went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh in the defeat.

Kyle Neuenschwander took the loss, allowing seven runs — five earned — on seven hits. He struck out four and walked four in four innings.

Jeremiah Kaiser had three hits for the Starfires, and Kyle White and Justin Caffee added two hits apiece. White and Neuenschwander each scored twice, and White, Kaeser and Brian “Buzz” Caffee each had a double.

South Adams will play at Southern Wells Monday at 4:30 p.m.

SA falls to the Falcons

The Starfires track teams came close, but got nipped at the finish line one too many times against Winchester Thursday. The boys team took a 63-59 loss to the Falcons while the girls team suffered a 68-55 defeat.

Heath Lehman and Adam Zimmerman were the big point scorers for the boys team, combing for all of its five individual wins.

Zimmerman topped each of the sprints, taking the 100-meter dash in 12 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 24.4 and the 400-meter dash in 56.9. Lehman took care of the long distance races, leading a one-two finish in the 1600-meter run ahead of Tim Conrad in 4:58, and taking the 3200-meter run in 11:06.

South Adams also won the 3200-meter relay.

The Starfire girls team got a pair of wins from Jenny Lehman in the hurdles. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.5 and took the 300-meter hurdles in 55.2.

Lori Lichtenberg won the 100-meter dash ahead of teammate Laura Meshberger by one tenth of a second in 14.4 She was second behind teammate Casey Gentis in the 200-meter dash.

Meshberger added a victory in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, three inches, and Hannah Lautzenheiser took the discus with a toss of 81 feet, one inch.

The Starfires also won the 400-meter relay.

The girls team will run at home Monday against Fort Wayne Wayne at 4:30 p.m.

Redkey tryouts

The Redkey Junior League will hold try-outs for its 12-and-under boys all-star baseball team beginning Saturday.

Tryouts will be at the Redkey Park large diamond Saturday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Players are asked to attend each of the three sessions.

Jaguars split pair

The Jay County Jaguars under-14 soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the Centerville Invaders Saturday, but bounced back for a 7-3 win over the Henry County Vengeance Sunday.

Ryan Wellman powered the victory, scoring four goals against Henry County. He also had the lone goal against Centerville.

Dustin Fox scored twice against the Vengeance, and Josh Collins scored once.[[In-content Ad]]
