Jay senior places third in regional

Local Roundup

Jay County senior Caleb Bye will get to compete in at least one more high-level diving tournament in Indiana before he graduates. He took care of that Saturday.

Bye, who finished fifth at the IHSAA state meet this season and fourth last year, placed in the top three in both the one - and three-meter events at the USA Diving Region Three Winter Regional this weekend in Huntersville, N.C.

Those results qualified him for the USA Diving Speedo National Junior Diving Championships, which will be held this May in Bloomington.

Bye led for a good portion of the day in the one-meter competition and finished second with a score of 413.95. He was third in the three-meter standings in his first ever competition in that event, less than 10 points behind the champion with a score of 414.35.

The meet included diviners from 11 states, including fellow Indiana divier Jared Reardon of Noblesville. Also in attendance were state champions from Georgia and North Carolina, both of whom finished behind Bye.

Fort JV splits

The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team dominated Houston in their opening contest Saturday, but couldn’t keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the second. The Indians won the opener 16-4 before slipping in the second half of the twin bill, 14-13.

Fort Recovery (1-3) wasted no time in game one, taking control with an 11-run first inning. Houston never came close, scoring all of its four runs in the fourth inning.

Nick Schwieterman keyed the Indians’ offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs. Chris Galdeen was 2-for-3 and also scored three times.

Ryan Steinbrunner added a pair of hits, and Dusty Tobe and Brad Fortkamp each had a double. Fortkamp picked up the win, striking out five batters in five innings.

The second game went back and forth, with Fort Recovery grabbing a 13-11 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. Houston answered with two in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.

After a scoreless Indian sixth, the Wildcats pulled ahead with the winning run and held Fort Recovery scoreless in the seventh.

Steve Trobridge had three hits and three runs for the Indians, and Matt Hein had three hits and two runs. Nick Schwieterman, Tyler Wuebker and Dan Heitkamp also scored two runs apiece.

Tobe pitched the final two innings and took the loss. Hein started and gave up 11 runs in four innings.
