John Jay to have workshop

Ivy Tech Community College will partner with John Jay Center for Learning for an enrollment workshop later this month. Ivy Tech also recently received an endowed scholarship as well as a pair of awards.
The Enrollment Express Workshop is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at JJCL, 101 S. Meridian St., Portland.
The workshop offers students the opportunity to meet with staff from both John Jay and Ivy Tech and receive assistance with enrollment, financial aid, placement assessment and new student orientation. Those attending should bring copies of their SAT, PSAT and ACT scores as well as a high school transcript.

Ivy Tech also announced Monday that Tom Raper, a philanthropist and former owner of Tom Raper RV, has established an endowed scholarship fund for the school’s Richmond campus. Five scholarships will be awarded each year to students who are in financial need and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
The school also earned a pair of awards this week, being named a 2014 Military Friendly School by Victory Media and a Campus Impact Award from the Council for Resource Development.
The military award honors the top 20 percent of post-secondary schools that are “doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.” The impact award honors faculty for “improving their skills in order to provide the best possible teaching and student experience.”

Training offered
The Jay County Safety Council will offer training in Globally Harmonized System on Wednesday.
GHS, a standard put together by a group of international hazard communication experts, provides criteria for classifying chemical hazards and dealing with other safety issues. Debbie Rauen, an INSafe Safety Consultant, will lead the discussion at the event.
The training session, which is free to safety council members and $50 for non-members, will be from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 13 at John Jay Center for Learning, 101 S. Meridian St., Portland.

Delay approved
The Randolph County Board of Commissioners approved delaying its contract with E.ON Climate and Renewables to establish the Cardinal Wind Farm Project.
The move will allow Delaware County officials time to discuss its wind farm options, Mary Solada, E.ON attorney said. Randolph County’s current contract stated construction would begin this year on a 100 megawatt wind farm that was due to be completed by the end of 2016.
A three-year-extension, Solada said, allows E.ON to acquire more land in Randolph County.
The current plan calls for 50 turbines in Randolph County and 55 in Delaware County.

Ashman joins Mercer Health
Michelle Ashman, a certified nurse practitioner and certified wound ostomy continence nurse, specializing in wound ostomy and continence care, has joined Mercer Health’s medical staff.
Ashman is the only certified wound ostomy continence nurse in the local area, a press release stated.
She is a nine-year employee of Mercer Heath with previous experience in home health, medical surgical and the disease management center.
She is a Fort Recovery High School graduate and resides in Maria Stein with her husband and three children.

FBB expanding
First Bank of Berne is building a 2,140-square-foot expansion to its Berne Branch.
The bank, which also has a branch in Portland, chose Barkley Builders of Ossian as the general contractor for the expansion, which will house loan officers and other staff. The expansion is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2014.

TCC is a creator
Inc. Hire Power Awards ranked The Cellular Connection first in Indiana and 79th nationwide among private businesses that have generated the most jobs during the past 18 months.
TCC created 164 new jobs from Jan. 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013. The company, which is the largest Verizon Wireless retailer in the country, has a location in Portland.

Eidam named CEO
JoEllen Eidam has been named CEO of Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Eidam had served as interim CEO since her predecessor, Thomas J. Nordwick, resigned Jan. 1. The AMH hospital board of directors voted unanimously to approve her hiring for the position.

Millie’s donates
Fort Wayne-based Aunt Millie’s bread will be helping local food banks during the holiday season.
Aunt Millie’s will donate 100,000 loaves of bread to food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana (Muncie). Second Harvest serves a nine-county area that includes Jay County.

Service to end
LifeStream Services will stop serving lunch at the Marion-Grant County Senior Center Dec. 6, the organization recently announced.
The change was prompted by staff cuts that forced the organization to rely on volunteers to staff the cafes.
“We deeply regret the necessity to end lunch service at the Marion Senior Center,” said Kenneth Adkins of LifeStream, which also serves Jay County. “But we were unable, after repeated attempts to find regular volunteers who would be able to help five days a week.”

AMA awarded
The Academy of Model Aeronautics received the 2013 Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce’s Outstand Contribution to Education award.
The award recognizes a teacher, administrator, organization or company that has made significant contribution to education or workforce development in Delaware County. The Academy of Model Aeronautics supports the local education community through programming provided by its education department and National Model Aviation Museum, a press release stated.

Carter closes two
Carter Lumber closed two locations recently as part of a corporate consolidation.
The company, based in Akron, Ohio, closed its Celina and Van Wert, Ohio, stores.
It operates more than 150 stores, including one in Muncie.

Hospital award
The Joint Commissions, an accreditor of U.S. health care organizations, recently named Bluffton Regional Medical Center as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for the third consecutive year.
Bluffton Regional was honored for “exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions.” The hospital is one of just 182 nationwide to earn the honor each of the last three years.

BBB issues warning
The Better Business Bureau warned consumers Wednesday about a new email scam.
Email messages are sent claiming to have voicemail attachments, which upon opening release a malware infection.
Consumers should avoid opening such files and report them to the BBB by calling (800) 552-4631[[In-content Ad]]
