Lehman leads Star swimmer (11/17/04)

BERNE — It was a sophomore night for the South Adams girls swim team.

Haleigh Lehman led the effort as she was part of three of the Starfires’ five victories in a 90-80 win over DeKalb Tuesday.

Lehman, a sophomore, won both of her individual races. She dominated the 200-yard freestyle, winning by more than six seconds with a time of 2-minutes, 15.99 seconds.

She also took first in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.96.

Lehman teamed with sophomore Courtney Hewitt, junior Talitha Maven and senior Ashley Gresla to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:00.27. The South Adams team of Channing Yoder, Robyn Habegger, Shannon Muselman and Margaret Beymer finished second in the race.

Yoder, another sophomore, grabbed an individual win as well. She was first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:22.60.

Chelsea Yoder added a victory in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.44.

The Starfires will swim at Fort Wayne South Side Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

EJ boys win openers

MONROE — The East Jay boys basketball teams started their seasons off on the right track with a pair of wins over the Adams Central Jets Tuesday. The eighth grade boys rolled to a 51-31 win, and the seventh graders took a 27-19 victory.

No one on the eighth grade team scored in double figures as the Chiefs instead used a balanced attack with 10 different players putting the ball in the basket. Dexter Shreve and Lance Franklin shared the team-high with eight points apiece.

Cole Ingram, Adam Garringer and Colton Lombardo each scored six points.

The seventh grade squad got 10 points from Tyler Freyburgher. Eric Homan and Patrick Johnson each added four points.

Eagles edge SA

The West Jay eighth grade boys basketball team improved to 2-0 Tuesday, fighting off the South Adams Starfires for a 41-39 win.

The Eagles led 22-21 at halftime. They limited South Adams to just five third-quarter points to take a six-point lead and held on for the two-point win.

Jon Hawn and Brady Mills scored 14 points apiece to lead West Jay. Blake Price added 11 points.

Kyle DeArmond and Cody Meshberger each had 12 points for the Starfires.[[In-content Ad]]
