Lehmans lead SA, JH Stars take first (10/04/04)

BERNE — The Lehmans had another good showing for the South Adams cross country team as it hosted the South Adams Invitational Saturday. And, the junior high girls were champions.

Sophomore Haleigh Lehman and senior Heath Lehman, a brother and sister pair, each finished third in the event.

Haleigh led the girls team to a third-place effort with 147 points in the 15-team event. Southern Wells was first with 107, and Garrett took second with 128.

Heath and the boys team placed ninth out of 18 teams with 262 points. Garrett won with 87 points, and Carroll (Flora) was second with 104.

Taylor Miller and Maddie Moore went one-two for the junior high girls to lead a victory with 32 points. Northfield was second with 61 points in the seven-team field.

Haleigh Lehman finished in 15-minutes, 53 seconds, reaching the line two seconds ahead of Jennifer Kelly of Rossville for third place. The next two South Adams runners were Whitney Sprunger in 30th and Katie Welch in 31st with match times of 17:37.

Brittany Seeker was 38th in 17:58, and Shannon Muselman placed 45th in 18:10.

Trish Amstutz was 85th in 20:08, with Rachel Sprunger 86th in 20:13.

Heath Lehman was five seconds ahead of Rossville’s Adam Eikenberry in the boys race, finishing third in 16:41. Michael Lehman joined him in the top 10, finishing 10th in 17:05.

Desmond Grimm took 62nd in 19:10, Stephen Hirschy was 96th in 19:58, and Brian Lehman was 99th in 20:03. Justin Sommer finished 120th in 21:07.

Miller and Moore were outstanding for the junior high team, leading the race in times of 12:07 and 12:19. Kinsey Lengerich was sixth in 12:49.

Taylor Turner and Chelsey Nevil finished just out of the top 10 as they completed the team victory. They crossed the line in times of 13:20 and 13:22 respectively.

Danielle Miller was 19th in 14:00, and Sherri All took 23rd in 14:19. Becca Amstutz ran 40th in 15:20, and Emily Miller was 48th in 15:50.

Wellman 18th in state

NOBLESVILLE — East Jay’s Kylie Wellman showed off her talents Saturday, finishing among the top 20 at the Middle School State Cross Country Championships at Noblesville.

Wellman had the top finish for the Chiefs, placing 18th in the girls race in 11-minutes, 49 seconds. She was one minute off the winning pace.

The girls team finished 14th overall, and the boys team was 12th.

Following Kylie Wellman for the girls team was Leah Wellman in 88th in 13:01. Katie Butcher was 94th in 13:12, Cassie Laux was 95th in 13:12 and Tiffany Helms finished 99th in 13:16.

Joni Degler took 101st in 13:20, and Trisha Helms was 119th in 14:29.

Kyle Simmons topped the charts for the boys team with his 40th-place finish in 10:54. Isaac Poole was 67th in 11:21, and Patrick Johnson took 71st in 11:22.

Joey Franks finished in 81st in 11:29, and Jordan Moser followed in 104th in 11:55. Steven Kelly matched Moser’s time in 105th, and Eric Homan was 117th in 12:07.

Phillip Powell had the top finish at the junior varsity level, placing 21st in the boys race in 12:05. Mallory Poole had the top JV girls time for the Chiefs as she was 26th in 13:16.[[In-content Ad]]
