Lightning postpones Jay, Bruins (08/25/07)
JCHS football
Jay County delayed the start of Friday night's game in an effort to avoid the heat. Instead, lightning burned them.
The host Patriots and Blackford Bruins managed to play less than six minutes of football before the officials stopped the action as lightning moved closer and closer to Harold E. Schutz Stadium. The game will be picked up tonight at 7 p.m.
Game two of the 2007 season was scheduled to begin Friday at 7 p.m., but was shifted to 8 p.m. at mid-day because of concerns about the heat and humidity. It didn't actually start until about 8:15 p.m., and there wasn't much action, and no points, in the limited time on the field.
Jay County (0-1) opened with the ball and moved to the Blackford 30-yard line before fumbling it away. The Bruins (1-0) marched in the opposite direction - they did not throw a pass on their opening drive - and reached the Patriot 37-yard line before executing a quick kick on fourth-and-9.
Billy Wellman threw one incomplete pass for Jay County on its second possession before play was stopped at 8:27 p.m. with 6:42 remaining in the first quarter. Officials and coaches from both teams met and called the game for the evening at 8:59 p.m.
In the handful of plays, Wellman completed one pass to Justin Mann for 17 yards, and the Patriots' Lance Franklin rushed once for 13 yards.
Blackford running back Branigan Norton carried the ball three times for 25 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
