Marsh to close eight stores

Business roundup

Marsh Supermarkets is closing eight locations, including two of its seven Muncie locations.
The company announced Thursday that it will close MainStreet Market stores on West Bethel Avenue and in the Southway Centre in Muncie. Its other closures include two stores in Muncie, as well as locations in Franklin, Lebanon, Speedway and Franklin, Ohio.
Marsh also operates the MainStreet Market store at 218 W. Lincoln St. in Portland among its 90-plus stores in Indiana and Ohio.
“Customers have spoken and we are reacting to the realities of the markets and making difficult decisions to address the long-term health of the company,” Marsh said in a press release.
The company closed its store on East McGalliard Road in Muncie last year.
Marsh was founded in 1931 and traces its roots to New Pittsburg in Randolph County. It was later headquartered in Yorktown. It moved its corporate offices to Fishers 20 years ago.
Previously a family-owned company, it was sold to a group of Florida investors in 2006.

Hospice hires
State of the Heart Hospice announced the recent hiring of four new employees who will work out of the company’s Portland office.
Melissa Walker was hired as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Amy Lynn Boughman as a Registered Nurse, Kimberly McAfee as a Primary Registered Nurse and Kerri Jennell Cunningham as a part-time on-call Registered Nurse.
Walker, of Dunkirk, has worked in the health-care field as an LPN for the last two years at long-term care facilities. She also spent four years as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant.
Boughman, a Hartford City resident, is a recent college graduate, having earned her RN degree from Ivy Tech Community College in Muncie. She worked as a student nurse in medical/surgical at Marion General Hospital in Marion.
McAfee, of Celina, Ohio, worked in hospice care in Florida for two years. She also has four years of experience in psychiatric nursing.
Cunningham, an Anderson resident, has experience as an RN and is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care nurse.
State of the Heart, which also has offices in Coldwater and Greenville, Ohio, cares for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Loan approved
Randolph County Commissioners in December approved a $52,500 forgivable loan to Union City Assembly.
The loan will be used for job training and retention as well as to purchase new equipment. In order for the loan to be forgiven, UCA must create at least 10 new jobs in the next 18 months with an average pay rate of $11 per hour.
Equipment will be used as collateral in case those requirements are not met.

Bridge a finalist
A representative of USI Consultants, Inc., told Adams County Commissioners last month that the county’s Ceylon covered bridge rehabilitation project is a finalist in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Engineering Excellence competition.
The reconstruction of the covered bridge over the Wabash River near Ceylon was completed in 2012. It was originally built in 1860 and is the only covered bridge over the Wabash in the state.[[In-content Ad]]
