Martens, White lead the Starfires (05/28/03)

It took a little while to get going, but the South Adams baseball team put a beating on Fort Wayne Harding Tuesday.

The Starfires trailed 3-0 after an inning and a half, but scored five times in the third and fifth innings for a 13-3, five-inning victory.

Zane Martens led the offensive onslaught, going 2-for 2 with a home runs. He had three RBIs and scored twice.

Kyle White was right with him, finishing 2-for-3 with a doubles. He had two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Brian “Buzz” Caffee had two doubles, three RBIs and a run, while his brother Justin went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.

Justin Caffee pitched in relief to earn the victory. He tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one.

South Adams will play its final game of the season at home Saturday against Mississinewa at 11 a.m.

Junior League

Vance Heating and Cooling edged MainSource Bank in one Portland Junior League Willie Mays League game Tuesday 14-13, and Portland Optimist topped Ja-Mar T.V. and Appliance in the other contest 8-4.

In Sandy Koufax League action it was Redkey Lions over Graphic Printing 10-8, and Portland Elks defeating Winchester 4-3.

Vance 14, MainSource 13

Chase Johnson dominated the contest for Vance, slamming a home run and a pair of triples. Eric Beougher picked up the victory.

Optimist 8, Ja-Mar 4

Optimist got a big game from Brandon Kaufman, who hit a home run. He was also the winning pitcher.

Issac Bruggeman had two hits, including a triple, for Ja-Mar.

Lions 10, Graphic 8

Matt Delzeith hit a three-run home run as part of a five-run first inning for the Lions. He added a double and another home run, scored three times and had four RBIs.

Shay White and John Roddeffer also had two hits apiece.

Ronnie Reynolds homered and scored twice for Graphic.

Elks 4, Winchester 3

Elks built a 4-0 lead and held off a fifth-inning rally by Winchester. Cody Scott singled and scored twice for Elks, and Derek Barnett was the winning pitcher.

Josh Chamness tripled and drove in a run for Winchester.

VanSkyock on tour

Jay County junior Nicole VanSkyock will participate in an 18-day trip to Europe sanctioned by USA Track and Field.

She will visit Switzerland, Austria, France and England along with more than 30 other athletes from throughout the country. VanSkyock — a cross country, swimming and track athlete for the Patriots — will compete in the Youth Invitational in Innsbruck, Austria as part of the trip.

Summer soccer

The Jay Community Center will host a summer soccer league for children ages 7-14 this summer.

There will be up to three age divisions and separate leagues for boys and girls based on the level of interest. The cost is $30 for one child, $45 for two children and $60 for three or more, which includes a T-shirt.

Games will be played at General Shanks Elementary School on Saturdays beginning June 14, and the deadline to register is May 30. There will also be a Parents/Coaches vs. Kids game on Friday, July 4.

Soccer schedule

The schedule for soccer open gyms at the Jay Community Center has been released.

Open gyms for sixth through eighth graders will be Thursday, May 29, Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. They will be held for fourth through sixth graders Monday, June 2 and Wednesday June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.
