Moser named to AP first team (12/03/04)

Local Roundup

Even in a 2-8 season there were positives for the South Adams football team. Startfire junior Grant Moser was among the players honored Thursday when The Associated Press released its All-State football teams.

Moser, a 6-foot-1-inch, 245-pound defensive lineman, was one of two players selected to the Class 2A first team at defensive tackle. He was joined by senior Kyle Kirkpatrick of Eastbrook.

Moser anchored a defense which held teams to seven points or fewer three times this year. The defense led both South Adams victories as those wins came by scores of 6-0 over Central Noble and 6-2 over Bluffton.

Jay swim teams fall

PORTLAND — The Patriots hope to have better weeks.

After winning just four events Tuesday against Bluffton the Jay County swim teams combined for just three wins in a couple of losses to the Anderson Highland Scots Thursday. The boys team slipped to 0-2 with a 112-61 loss, and the girls team fell below .500 for the first time this season with a 124-62 defeat.

Matthew Peterson paced the best Patriot finish of the night, leading a sweep of the 100-yard freestyle in 56.30 seconds. He was followed by Joseph Vormohr and Josh Shatto.

However, Highland won on the power of three sweeps in boys events and two more on the girls side.

Derrick Lee picked up the only other victory for the Jay County boys, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 1-minute, 1.59 seconds. It was the second best time of his career, trailing only his 2004 sectional time.

The lone win for the girls team (2-3) came from junior Lindsey Vesperry, who took the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 1:02.85.

The Patriots will swim in the Lawrence North Relays Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
