Niekamp captures MAC high jump title (05/14/03)

Fort Recovery’s Tyler Niekamp continued his domination of the high jump Tuesday.

The senior, who broke his own school record with a leap of 6 feet, eight and one-quarter inches at the Mercer County meet last week, won the event again at the Midwest Athletic Conference meet at Coldwater Tuesday. He took first by clearing the bar at six feet, six inches.

Kristi Westgerdes finished seventh for the Indians in the long jump at 14 feet, seven and one-quarter inches.

Stars slam Wayne

The South Adams softball team ended its losing streak with a 17-0 win over Fort Wayne Wayne in five innings Tuesday.

The Starfires got big efforts up and down the order, scoring six runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and 5 in the fifth to turn a 2-0 lead into a dominating win. Emily Thornton was the top hitter with five hits, three runs and an RBI.

Candice Miller went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBIs, and Carrie Nichols scored three times. Mickayla Smith had two hits two runs and two RBIs, and Jill Lehman added a pair of hits and two runs.

Jessica Smith scored twice and Kelly Mertz had a couple of RBIs.

Mickayla Smith also earned the win, tossing five shutout innings. She walked one and struck out one while giving up two hits.

South Adams hosts Jay County today at 4:30 p.m.

The pairings for the state tournament were also released today, with South Adams scheduled to meet Southern Wells at Churubusco Monday, May 26 at Noon. In other games that day, Fort Wayne Christian will play Churubusco at 10 a.m., and Fort Wayne Canterbury will meet Adams Central at 3 p.m. in semifinal action.

The second semifinal game will pit the Fort Wayne Christian/Churubusco winner against the Southern Wells/South Adams winner at 5 p.m.

The championship game of the tournament will be Tuesday, May 27 at 5 p.m.

Fort falls to Coldwater

Fort Recovery’s baseball team couldn’t pull back to the .500 mark it has hovered around all season, slipping to an 8-5 loss to Coldwater Tuesday.

Greg Snyder tossed 51/3 innings in the defeat. He struck out four batters and walked four.

Greg Faller and Mark Knapke each went 2-for-4 for the Tribe. Faller had two doubles, one RBI and one run, and Knapke had one double, one run and two RBIs.

Nathan Sudhoff finished the contest 3-for-4 with an RBI. Greg Heitkamp added one hit, one run and one RBI, and Snyder and C.J. Tobe each had a hit and a run.

Fort Recovery’s final game of the season is at home Friday at 5 p.m. against Midwest Athletic Conference rival Minster.

Indians’ JV loses

The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team couldn’t get anything going offensively in an 8-0 defeat against Coldwater Tuesday.

Nick Schwieterman had the lone hit in the game for the Indians.

Todd Post took the loss in six innings of work.

Fishing workshop

Warren Vanderhill and Ken Langell of the Royal River Fly-Fishing Shop in Indianapolis will conduct a fly-fishing workshop.

The workshop will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie.

The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members and the deadline to register is Saturday, May 10.
