Niekamp headed to state meet (05/31/03)

Local Roundup

Fort Recovery held its spring athletics banquet more than a week ago, but Tyler Niekamp just keeps extending his season.

Niekamp competed in the regional track and field meet at Piqua Friday where he finished second. His jump of six feet, six inches was enough to earn him a trip to the state meet.

The senior will take part in the state competition at Welcome Stadium in Dayton Friday at 1 p.m.

Rockets ready to roll

The Portland Rockets amateur baseball team will begin its 44th season today against LaMargarita at Carrington Field in Fort Wayne.

The Rockets, who went 27-10 last season before dropping out of the state tournament to eventual champions the South Bend Senators, will be playing in the Fort Wayne Stan Musial League. Coached by Randy and Ray Miller they spent the last two seasons in the Tri-State League, winning the championship both years.

This year’s squad features a host of local products, including newcomer Mitch Waters. Waters is a 2002 Jay County High School graduate who currently plays third base and pitcher for Ancilla College.

Waters will join a fellow former Patriot Pete Byrum, who just finished his junior season as a pitcher for the Indiana Tech Warriors. He helped the team to a berth in the NAIA World Series.

Josh Mayfield, who teamed with Waters on the Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team last season, will also play his first season with the Rockets. He is currently at Glenn Oaks College.

Back with the team will be South Adams graduate Matt Ousley. He has won more games than any other Portland pitcher during the last five seasons. Also returning on a part-time basis will be 13-year veteran and team captain Scott Hall.

The most notable loss from the team will be Tommy Pearce, who spent time at almost every position on the field. He is currently on the roster for the Richmond Roosters of the Frontier League.

The Rockets’ first home game of the year will take place Sunday when they host the Fort Wayne Cardinals at Runkle-Miller Field at 2 p.m.

Rough day for Jay

The Jay County boys track team couldn’t crack the top four at the North Central regional meet Thursday, failing to advance anyone to the state level. The Patriots did not score any team points.

Lawrence North cruised to an easy win at the meet with 133 points. The host Panthers were second with 72 points, barely edging Ben Davis’ 71.

The top finish for Jay County came from Lucas McBride in the long jump. He leapt a foot further than he had in the Muncie Central sectional meet a week earlier, placing 10th at 19 feet, 10.75 inches.

Paul Imel was 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.58, and placed 15th in the 100-meter dash in 11.87. The 400-meter relay team of McBride, Steven Castillo, Alex Loucks and Adam Grile was 13th with a time of 46.83.

Grile and David Stith did not qualify for the finals of the high jump and shot put respectively.
