Niekamp sets high jump record (05/07/03)

Fort Recovery Roundup

Tyler Niekamp set a new Fort Recovery high jump record earlier this season with a leap of six feet, four inches. That, however, was nothing.

Niekamp slaughtered that record Tuesday at the Mercer County track meet for one of his two victories for the Indians. He cleared the bar at six feet, eight and one-quarter inches.

The jump also set a new Mercer County meet record.

The winning jump at last year’s Division III state meet was six feet, six inches by Jason Jackson of Defiance Ayersville.

Niekamp also won the long jump at 20 feet, six inches.

Holly Stein also had an excellent meet for Fort Recovery at the junior high Mercer County track meet. She finished with a trio of victories.

Stein owned the field events, winning three out of four. She was first in the discus at 92 feet, one inch, the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 10 inches and the jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10 inches.

The Mercer County meet continues Thursday at Coldwater at 5 p.m.

Renee Evers had one hit, two RBIs and a run in the contest. Tanya Tobe as had one hit, and added an RBI and a stolen base.

Comeback falls short

Fort Recovery’s baseball team scored three times in the seventh inning Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as it suffered a 9-8 loss against Parkway.

The Indians (10-11, 2-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) were down 6-0 after two innings before cutting the margin to 6-4. Parkway surged back ahead, and they couldn’t pull off the comeback in the final inning.

Greg Snyder took the loss, allowing nine runs — six earned — on 12 hits. He walked five and struck out three in seven innings.

Greg Faller went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs on the day. Nick Wehrkamp had a double, two runs and two RBIs.
