No. 1 Redskins top Fort spikers (10/13/04)

ST. HENRY, Ohio — Fort Recovery defeated the No. 2 volleyball team in the state — Marion Local — last week. The top-ranked St. Henry Redskins were ready for the Indians Tuesday.

St. Henry, No. 1 in Division IV, all but locked up the Midwest Athletic Conference title by finishing off the Tribe 25-19, 25-16, 25-16. The Redskins (18-3, 8-0 MAC) could finish off a perfect conference season with a win over Minster Thursday.

Fort Recovery (12-8, 4-3 MAC), which finished 15th in this week’s Division IV voting, got 15 kills from sophomore middle hitter Tiff Gaerke. Gaerke also had team highs of nine blocks and seven points while adding seven digs.

Junior setter Jennalee Post had 23 assists and five blocks. Senior middle hitter Krystal Rammel finished with seven kills and 10 digs.

Rachel Brackman notched 20 digs, and Holly Stein finished with six points.

The Indians also dropped the junior varsity match to St. Henry by a 25-17, 25-19 score.

Lauren Wenning paced Fort Recovery (13-3, 4-3 MAC) with team highs of six points and five kills. She also had seven digs and one block.

Abby Niekamp finished with seven assists and five points, and Brittany Brackman had 13 digs. Alicia Schwieterman notched three kills, and Sarah Braun had three blocks.

The Tribe will play Thursday at New Bremen at 6 p.m.

Freshmen top Tigers

VERSAILLES, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team won a pair of close games over the Versailles Tigers Tuesday, 25-22, 25-22.

Heath Schmackers finished with a pair of team highs for the Indians, scoring seven points and putting up five assists. Ashley Grube was right behind Schmackers with six points, and finished second on the team with four kills.

Jill Pottkotter racked up five kills and four blocks, best on the team in both categories. LeAnn Tobin had 12 digs, Beth May added seven digs and Angie Wenning notched four assists.

JH splits with Cards

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh grade volleyball team rallied to finish its season with a victory Tuesday. The eighth grade team lost, but will still get another chance.

The seventh grade Indians dropped the first game, but came back to win the next two over the New Bremen Cardinals for a 14-25, 25-22, 15-5 victory. The eighth graders, who still look forward to the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament, dropped a 25-21, 25-12 decision to New Bremen.

Nicole Pottkotter and Emily May shared a team-high four kills for the seventh grade team (10-5). They also had two digs apiece.

Pottkotter racked up 14 points, and May finished with a pair of blocks.

Josie Guggenbiller added six points and two kills. Emily Guggenbiller had three digs, Alyssa Brackman added two digs, and Sylvia Schwieterman notched two kills.

Carly Staugler finished with six assists, and Chelsey Leuthold had three assists.

The Indian eighth graders (7-7) got four kills, three points and a block from Anne Koesters. Kinsey Wenning had three digs, two kills and two points.

Chelsea Klenke had five points and four assists, and Kelsey Wuebker also had four assists. Heidi Tobe added three kills.

The eighth grade team will open Midwest Athletic Conference tournament play Thursday against New Knoxville at Parkway High School at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
