BERNE — The home-court advantage wasn’t enough to extend the South Adams volleyball season.
The Starfires, hosting the sectional tournament, dropped out in the first round Thursday with a 25-10, 25-23, 25-16 loss to the Heritage Patriots. Heritage advances to play Adams Central in Saturday’s semifinal round after the Class 2A No. 1 Jets thumped Fort Wayne Harding 25-10, 25-10, 25-7 Thursday.
Robyn Habegger, Renee Neuenschwander and Brooke Fox shared the team high of six kills in South Adams’ final match of the year.
Fox also had team highs of 12 digs and six blocks. Habegger finished with 11 digs and two aces.
Alyssa Miller put up 20 assists, and Kara Ross totaled five blocks.
Patriots honored
Two more Jay County athletes picked up Academic All-State honors this week. Adding to the list of Patriot honorees were boys soccer players Trent Bailey and Sean Adams.
Bailey, who finished the season 25th in the state with 22 goals, was also an All-District selection.
Bailey and Adams join fellow Patriots Brianne Morrical, Julie Sours, Erin St. Myers, Angie Hilgeford and Jessica Heitkamp in earning state academic honors.
FR gridders blanked
COLDWATER — Neither Fort Recovery football team could get on the board Thursday in a couple of losses to the Coldwater Cavaliers. The eighth grade Indians lost 33-0, and the seventh graders fell by a 20-0 count.
Long takes title
Curt Long claimed the highest overall total as the Fort Recovery Gun Club Fall Trap League finished competition recently.
Long took first place by breaking 279 out of 300 targets. He also led the winning team with teammates Gary Reinhart, Dave Knapke, Tom Bailey and Joe Schwieterman.
The winning team and the top individual on each squad received a trophy and/or shells.
Team leaders were Dave Knapke, Craig Buschur, Joe Harlamert, John Backs, Jon Smith, Ken Schlater, Tod Kunk, Brian Evers, Curt Long, Mike Rockwood, Jeff Homan, Bob Green, John Fisher, Dale Siegrist, Josh Ebbing, Jay Knapschaefer, Brad Westgerdes, Steve Shauver and Gary Zerkel.[[In-content Ad]]
