Portland Junior League needs umpires (04/28/03)

The Portland Junior League is looking for umpires for the coming season.

Umpires are needed for boys baseball and girls softball games at all age levels. Those interested should contact Doug Reed at (260) 726-4917.

Swimmers to begin in May

The Jay County summer swim team will hold its opening night for new swimmers Thursday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the JCHS pool. Coaches will evaluate the skill level of new swimmers to see where they may fit with the team.

Practices for the summer swim team will begin Monday, May 5. They will be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the JCHS pool.

Swimmers 11-and-older will practice from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., and swimmers 10-and-under will practice from 5 to 5:45 p.m.

The swim team is also looking for a new coach. Those interested should call Bev Arnold at (260) 726-9306.

Golf outing

The Patriot Booster Club will hold its annual golf outing Sunday, May 4 at Portland Country Club.

The tournament will be played in a best-ball scramble format, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $180 for a team of four players, and includes lunch and door prizes.

Zupancic to speak

Former Indianapolis Colts strength and weight coach Tom Zupancic will speak at Jay County High School next month.

Zupancic will be in Jay County Saturday, May 10, and tickets will cost $5. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event.

In addition to his two decades with the Colts, Zupancic was a member of the United State Olympic Greco Roman wrestling squad at the heavyweight position. He holds several world weightlifting records, including the world neck press record.

Tickets are available at the Vormohr Medical Center, First Bank of Berne (Portland) and Bob and Sons Insurance. They are also available by calling JCHS football coach Shane Hill at (260) 726-9306.

Wrestling in Portland

International Pro Wrestling will hold a show in Portland today at the Jay County Boys and Girls Club Community Center.

Tickets range in price from $5 to $10. The event will begin at 7 p.m.

The IPW wrestlers will also be at the Portland Wal-Mart to sign autographs on today beginning at noon.

Fort needs coaches

Fort Recovery High School is looking for a varsity boys basketball coach.

Head coaching positions with the Indians are also open for boys golf and cross country. They are also in search of an assistant volleyball coach.
