Portland resident earns $ (05/02/03)

Stephanie Arnold, 26, of Portland, was recently awarded a grant from Balance Bar as she trains for the 2004 Olympic Women’s Archery Team.

Arnold is currently ranked 17th in the country, with just three years of experience in the sport. The grant will be used to fund her training, which will include a trip to the 2003 World Target Trials.

The grants from Balance Bar are given to those who participate in activities which “balance the body and mind.” Arnold was selected for the award from more that 600 applicants.

Soccer schedule

The schedule for soccer open gyms at the Jay County Boys/Girls Club Community Center was released this week.

Open gyms for sixth through eighth graders will be Friday, May 16, Thursday, May 29, Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. They will be held for fourth through sixth graders Monday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.

East Jay wins 1st

The East Jay baseball team opened its season with a win Wednesday, taking down Muncie Central 8-3.

East Jay trailed early before tying the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning. It scored once in the sixth inning to pull ahead and then four times in the seventh inning for the final margin.

Michael Jobe was the offensive star, going 4-for-4 with a double and a triple. Casey Waters, Aaron Bogenschutz, Kaleb Carpenter and Justin Mann each added one hit apiece.

Carpenter picked up the victory, allowing one run on two hits in three innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Waters started the game and worked three innings, and Jobe tossed one scoreless inning to close the game.

Zupancic to speak

Former Indianapolis Colts strength and weight coach Tom Zupancic will speak at Jay County High School.

Zupancic will be in Jay County Saturday, May 10, and tickets will cost $5. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event, no tickets will be available at the door.

In addition to his two decades with the Colts, Zupancic was a member of the United States Olympic Greco Roman wrestling squad at the heavyweight position. He holds several world weightlifting records, including the world neck press record.

Soccer camp

The Jay County High School soccer camp for third through sixth graders will be May 12 through 15 at Jay County High School.

The camp will be held each of the four days at the JCHS soccer fields from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $25, which includes a T-shirt, and the deadline to register is May 5.
