Record books in reach for Fort Recovery softball (04/28/03)

Local Roundup

The Fort Recovery softball team is headed toward uncharted waters.

Having recorded its first ever winning season a year ago, the Indians are well on their way to surpassing last year’s 14-7 mark. They took two more steps toward that goal, defeating Franklin Monroe 8-0 and 10-4 in double-header action Saturday.

With the pair of wins over the Jets, the Tribe is at 10-3 and still has 11 regular season games to etch itself in the history books as the best team the school has ever seen.

Sarah Schmitz took care of the first game for the Indians, tossing a one-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked three as she improved to 8-2 on the year.

Krystal Rammel provided her with all the offense she would need, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, a triple, two runs and two RBIs. Ciera Rammel added two hits and two runs.

Also scoring twice were Lisa Grisez and Julie Faller.

Fort Recovery jumped ahead 8-0 in the first two innings of the second game and rolled to the victory.

Faller took over the offensive lead from Rammel, going 4-for-5 with a triple and a home runs. She had five RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Krystal Rammel still had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run and an RBI. Ciera Rammel, Joscie Kaup and Schmitz each added two hits.

Alyssa Tobe took the game-two win, allowing four unearned runs on three hits in seven innings. She struck out eight and walked six.

Fort Recovery will host Bradford Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Fort back to .500

Breaking even has been the story for the Fort Recovery baseball team this year. It pulled its record back to that mark at 9-9 Saturday with a pair of victories over Botkins, 13-4 and 20-6.

The Indians’ offense had its way with Trojans, scoring 33 runs in the twin bill.

Mark Knapke led the offensive barrage in the first game, going 4-for-5 with a double. He drove in two runs and scored twice.

Greg Heitkamp had a double and a home run while scoring twice and notching two RBIs. Dusty Guggenbiller also homered as one of his two hits and had four RBIs and two runs.

Greg Snyder, Greg Faller and C.J. Tobe also had two hits in the contest.

Tobe was the beneficiary in the first game, allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings for the win. She struck out one and walked three.

Tobe turned his attention to his bat in the second game, going a perfect 5-for-5 with a double. He had three RBIs and scored six times.

Nathan Sudhoff went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run. He drove in four runs and scored three times.

Faller added three RBIs, Snyder scored three times, and Heitkamp notched three hits.

Nick Wehrkamp picked up the victory, allowing six runs on six hits. He walked five batters.

Fort Recovery will again try to vault over the .500 mark when it hosts St. John’s Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Stars drop pair

South Adams’ baseball team gave up big innings late in both games of its double header Saturday at Eastbrook and took a pair of losses, 12-4 and 11-8.

The Starfires (3-7) were down just 5-3 after five innings of the first game, but allowed seven runs in the sixth inning to lose any chance to win. The second contest was tied at 2-2 before they gave up five runs in the fifth and four in the sixth on the way to a three-run defeat.

Kyle Neuenschwander went the distance in the game-one loss, giving up 12 runs — eight earned — on six hits. He walked two and struck out four.

Tyler Sprunger lost the second game, giving up 11 runs — eight earned – on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked five in six innings.

Neuenschwander had two of his team’s six hits in the first game with a double and a home run. He also went 2-for-4 in the second game with a double and pair of RBIs.

Justin Haines and Aaron Givens each had two hits and two RBIs, and Justin Caffee and Kyle White also added two hits apiece. Lance Balsiger was 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs.

South Adams hosts Bellmont today at 4:30 p.m.

No mercy for Miss

The 10-run after five-innings mercy rule didn’t help Mississnawa Valley much against the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team Saturday. Even though it played just 10 innings over two games, the Tribe scored 92 total runs in wins of 51-2 and 41-0 against the Blackhawks.

Jill Wehrkamp put up the most ridiculous stats in the first game, going 6-for-7 with a double, three home runs, 11 RBIs and four runs scored. Kelsie Will went 7-for-8 with six runs and a stolen base, and Kristen Schwieterman had a triple a home run, six runs and six RBIs.

Everyone’s numbers were insane in the second game, with Megan Wenning leading the way as she went 6-for-6 with four runs, seven RBIs and two stolen bases. Will and Alicia Schmackers hit home runs.

Wehrkamp got the game-one win, allowing two unearned runs in five innings. Katie Lauber won the second game, pitching five shutout innings.[[In-content Ad]]
