SA boys crush Raiders, Warriors (09/10/03)

South Adams’ boys prefer to run in a pack. A pack well ahead of everyone else.

The Starfires took the top five finishing positions in a three-way meet against the Southern Wells Raiders and the Woodlan Warriors Tuesday to score a pair of 15-40 victories.

The South Adams girls team earned a split, losing to the Raiders 23-32 while defeating the Warriors 25-33.

Heath Lehman took the lead role for South Adams with a time of 17:43. Michael Lehman was just six seconds behind at 17:49.

Josh Sprunger placed third overall in 18:28, Tim Conrad was fourth in 18:33 and Tyler Clemens was fifth with a time of 19:36.

Haleigh Lehman took the victory for the Starfire girls, winning in 16:02. Jamie Paul placed fifth in 17:19.

Katie Welch finished 11th in 18:07, Lauren Tooley was 12th in 18:17 and Whitney Sprunger took 13th in 18:28.

The Starfires will run at the Blackford Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

FR middle school spikers split

Fort Recovery’s eighth grade volleyball team dropped a 15-13, 8-15, 15-9 decision to the Versailles Tigers while the seventh grade team took a 15-4, 15-17, 15-5 victory.

Chelsea Klenke had a big match for the seventh grade team (3-3). She scored 19 points and finished with 10 sets.

Kinsey Wenning had three blocks and three digs. Kelsey Wuebker had nine points, Anne Koesters had eight sets and Joanna Snyder came away with three digs.

Ashley Grube had more kills than the rest of the eighth grade team combined, finishing with seven. She also notched a team-best three blocks, and added five digs.

Heather Schmackers had 16 points and recorded 10 sets. Angie Wenning had eight points, 15 sets and eight digs, and Beth May put up eight sets.

Jay-Mercer gets first win

The Jay-Mercer Cougars semi-pro football team earned the first win of their inaugural season Saturday, topping the Louisville Colts 14-12.

Jay-Mercer did all its scoring in the first half, but it was enough for the victory.

Fort Recovery graduate Cody Overman scored on a 12-yard run in the first quarter, and Jay County graduate Chad Timmerman ran in a 22-yard score in the second quarter.

Timmerman led the team in rushing with 101 yards on 22 carries, and Overman followed with 47 yards on nine carries. Eric Schmitz took the ball eight times and gained 35 yards.

The next game for the Cougars is Saturday against the Anderson Chiefs at Fort Recovery High School at 4 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
